I've read this before, along with another article done by UCLA on tests done on a 100+ y/o can of something. Perfectly edible. Folks need to get over the Best By and Expiration dates on canned goods, PROOF is, they last forever! As long as its not bulging, EAT IT!

A lot of food is perfectly edible, but the nutrient value goes down in many food the longer it is stored. Also, when considering food in your freezer, the better protected the food is, the longer it lasts in the freezer. Many reccomend that you don't keep foods in the freezer longer than a year at the most, but if something is vacuum sealed in a heavy bag, it can be good for much much longer.
I learned last night ,after forgetting to put yeast rolls out to rise for dinner, that biscuit mix that had been refrigerated with an expiration date of '07 still made great biscuits.
Good info---I've been stocking piling canned goods for a while now but was afraid to get too many fearing the shelf live. I guess I'll be redoing the pantry now--LOL
While I was in Tulsa this week, I was digging post-holes for a new deck and heard a "clink".....thought "oh, sh*t"...another cable.....gently dug in with my hand and found what looked to be an old sardine tin......being the curious type, I shook it, sniffed it, etc.....cracked her open and found it to be stuffed with....you guessed it....sardines packed in tobasco.....
The house was built in 1957, so I'm just gonna assume that I had 51 year old sardines for lunch on Tuesday....all the guys were freaked out, but they didn't seem any different than any others I've recently had......
The tin is currently undergoing the dishwasher cycle, to be kept as a momento....It's one of those old key-top cans, and I just think it's cooler than sh*t....
Anyways.....canned sardines....bury 'em for a few decades....they just might last ;)

That's very interesting news. I think it's great! I guess you didn't get sick since it was Tuesday you ate them. :):)

Well...I've had to eat some pretty nasty sh*t in my lifetime, and come out on top most of the time....some folks even make it some kind of rite-of-passage to eat rancid meat, etc...... but you'd be surprised what the stomach can handle, if the mind is up to it....they really did taste like they were packed yesterday, though....

Dam, thanks for the field test! This reminds me to hit our Big Lots store today. They have a variety of canned Sardines and other fish in a can with spicy sauces, mustard or just plain oils. I speak from experience here people, a plate of rice and a tin of fish tastes good, is loaded with Omega 3 oils and a assortment of other vitamins and minerals. Presentation is weak but it is good. Excellent for our scenarios. I can get it for .75 cents a tin.

I hit Big Lots and got 8 cans of Fish Steaks, some in Green Chiles and some with Louisianna Hot Sauce. 16 can of Sardines in hot sauce, spring water, soybean oil and Mustard. The Fish Steak were .85 cents each. Sardines .75 cents each. The other items are six cans of Armour Chili with beans, 24 oz size. Get this $1.50 each! Big Lots also has good deals on kitchen tools.. Solid steak knives, Large knives, SS Spoons 14-16 long, All in one can openers for a buck. I encourage anyone who is close to Big Lots to go thru from end to end. Also added 24 rolls of TP from Wally World (Walmart).
