The site lists the two percentages (6% and 8.25%) of bleach and the correct dosages of each. Never use scented bleach.

After water is boiled, its taste is lacking; they recommend adding a pinch of salt to improve it. However, it is potable water and when one needs water, I doubt the taste would be important.

If water is cloudy, let it settle and filter it through a clean cloth, paperboiling water towel, or coffee filter.

IMO, let it settle in a container, then without disturbing the sediment on the bottom, siphon the water through a filter into a clean container.

An easy way to collect water is rain barrels at the downspouts. Add a screen in the gutter to prevent leaves etc. from getting in the rain barrels.

Find locally available water sources.

As for filters I use Sawyer in Wal Mart for $29.00. It filters down to .01 microns better then most. But it does not kill virus! You need to boil it to kill them all. Also the water source may have heavy metals in them (surface water).

How long do the Sawyer filters last before they need changing? The biggest issue with filters is the smallest micron filters clog very quickly.

A 20 micron filter filters any particle larger than .0008". A 25 Micron rated filter will filter out anything larger than the size of a white blood cell.

Bleach kills pathogens in water. At 6 drops of 8.25% bleach and 8 drops of 6% will purify a gallon of water, a gallon of bleach will purify lot of water.

We are blessed to have two year round rock springs within easy walking distance of the cabin. The closest is within 100' and we keep a lot of bleach on hand.
