  • Car BOB and food storage???

This may have been discussed in a thread long ago, but its something I have been tossing around in my head for some time now. Here in the Carolinas it gets pretty hot during the summer. I put together a decent Car (make it home to take care of the family) bag, but food has been a concern. If I can not make it by car, I have a 48 mile hump to make it to the homestead. I do have a number of different ways to make it home driving, but just in case I figured I'd get this backpack ready.Originally I was just going to keep a MRE in the pack, but I think with the temp getting up to say 120 in the car, the MRE would barely make it through 1 summer. Maybe not even that long. I have seen those rescue type bars and figured that may be my only alternative. I just wanted to see what some others think or may have already discussed.

Also would a liter bottle of water be OK with those types of temp swings?

Since it gets so hot down there, I would include several bottles of water. As for food, I would go with prepackages energy/granola bars and trailmix. Just leave out anything with chocolate and peanut butter in it.

      Monet861,
Just read your threat about an MRE in the summer heat. I dont think you would have an issue. While deployed to Iraq I made sure that all 4 of my vehicles had a minimum 2 cases of MRE's on board along with ALOT of water. The temperatures reached over 130F during the summer. The MRE's were still good. We just kept them out of the direct sun.

I live here in NC and I keep 2 MRE's in a Diamondback Tactical "E&E" bag in my trunk. I have broken them down so they will fit better and I can pack other items in it.

      Hope this helped.

keep your supplies in a cooler in the car, with ice packs? Sure, you'd have to keep refreezing your ice, but no worries during the day.

I wouldn't put the frozen ice pack directly on any of the items, who knows what being in contact with ice then melting every day would do, but I'm sure there's a way you can rig up some sort of "ice harness" and just dangle the pack.

A little trick I learned when working with some Park Rangers...

Freeze some water over night in a small butter dish or water bottle. Either is stronger than a plastic bag. Wrap in a plastic bag to collect condensation. Place on top of a small towel in the lunch bucket/cooler. Drink water with lunch. Use towel to clean off after lunch. Bucket is lighter carrying home because you drank the water.

Remember folks, Walmart has some of the best minds in the business when it comes to market research, supply and demand, etc. They have people constantly watching for trends and such. They are simply doing what any Capitalist (gasp ) business would do, identify a market/niche/demand and then respond to it.

                  But, then again, I'm ignernt.
