Deady toxic food mixes!!- please read before long term storing

I've gotten this email before. Its very true, check out snopes.com if you have questions on it. Please read the label for yeasts before storing. Store them for a MAXIMUM of two years from process date.


This is true for ANY food item that may have yeast already in it, including:
pancake mixes
cake mixes
bread mix
cornbread mix
Bisquick
Breadings or coatings

I have a recipe for making natural yeast from sugar and flour. I'll find it and post.




Cake Mixes & Toxins

A student at HBHS had pancakes this week and it almost became fatal.
His Mom (registered nurse) made him pancakes, droppedhim off at school and
headed to play tennis. She never takes her cell phone on the court but did this
time and her son called to say he washaving trouble breathing. She told him to
go to the nurse immediately and proceeded to call school and alert the
nurse. The nurse called theparamedics and they were there in 3 minutes and
worked on the boy all the way to the hospital. He came so close to dying.
Evidently this ismore common then I ever knew. Check the expiration dates on
packages like pancakes and cake mixes that have yeast which over time
develop
spores. Apparently, the mold that forms in old mixes can be toxic! Throw
away ALL OUTDATED pancake mix, Bisquick, brownie mixes etc you have in your
home.

I read this first thing this morning, and just shrugged it off. Got thinking about it later on in the day, and said to myself, "Self, pancake mix doesnt have yeast". So, when I got home, I raid the pantry. I was right, no yeast. Bisquik, cornbread, cake mixes, have them all, and checked them as well. No yeast. Story didnt sound right, now I know why.

Voodoo, I should have read the email I received this morning a little more carefully. It was not the one I"d received before, and my friend apparently rewrote it and changed it a bit.

Technically you are correct. It was not 'yeast' that caused the problem. HOWEVER, mold can grow in mixes that do not contain yeast, if they are left open (even folding over the top of the bag inside the box), or if they are more than two years old. Since you read the ingredients on the boxes, you can see that you are dealing with more than just flour. There are egg and dairy products in the mixes, especially the 'just add water' kind. I would suggest anyone read what the LDS food storage websites have to say about storing those products. They are the leading experts in long term food storage.

But its your perrogative to eat outdated mixes, so enjoy!

One has a better chance of choking on a chicken bone and dying, then toxic mixes. Foolish...

My question is how in the world do you get anything to stay in your cabinet that long?? if we dont refill every two weeks, we go hungry around here!
But then again most familys dont feed 9 mouths, lol
