Now, that was canned 100+ years ago. I would think the methods used today would be a little better! Only can that has not has studies done on, are the new pull tab cans like tuna, soup etc are now canned in.

Personally I would never eat anything that had been processed more than five years ago, even with all the preservatives and additives found in commercially canned foods today. I've tasted 'old' food and I dont want it if possible. I guess whatever youre comfortable with.

Joseph kept grains for 14 years during the famine of Egypt, but that was whole grains. Not cooked canned food, so I guess it depends on what you are storing and how long you want to risk it.

    Lo~

If you can your own food(though not feasible for everything) it will last at least 5 years....any(tin) canned goods could also be re canned in jars if your not comfy with the dates.I have never done it but it seems possible.

That date is what has been throwing me off.

makin a sandwich yesterday for next tuesday...

Grains keep longer than flour, although flour will keep 2-5 years if packaged properly.

Rice will keep indefinitely, and is nutritious. 2/3 of the world lives on it.

Oats will keep 3-5 years or longer.

Raw sugar as opposed to granulated white sugar keeps longer. Powdered sugar keeps longer too.

    Honey, not sure about.

I have recipes to dry eggs. They are cooked and dehydrated then reconstituted.

    Pastas, indefinitely with proper storage.

Canned vegetables/soups/tuna will keep 3-5 years if sealed with wax or other outside coating. No longer than 2 years if not sealed. NO DENTED CANS!!!!

Powdered milk 2-5 years, again with proper storage.

Lard keeps longer than butter, 2-5 with proper, although butter can be made from milk regularly if you have a cow or goat. And its ooh so much better. Lard also keeps longer than oils (2 years)

Cocoa powder as opposed to chocolate chips or squares.

Pudding mixes, up to 5 years with proper storage.

Notice an underlying theme here? PROPER STORAGE!!! Cool dry dark places, buckets with dry ice, or sealed in saran wrap two layers and as much air taken out of hte bucket as possible. Air is as bad as bugs and pests at deteriorating food.

If this thread is a duplicate, please point me in the right direction.
Can we get a list of the foods that you can store the longest, and the method that you store them?
Working...
