I took the Red Cross Wilderness First Aid course this weekend. IT WAS GREAT!!! 16hrs, $105, & I learned a ton. It is designed to supplement basic first aid skills for situations where help may be more than an hr away. The course covered all the basics of advanced (pre-EMT level) first aid with the additional restrictions of limited supplies and assisstance. The course also focuses on decision making in the field, with heavy emphasis on evac decisions.

I would strongly recommend this course to anyone on this site. Even if you're not a wilderness person and don't plan on being more than an hr from help, what if the ambulance wasn't coming? Katrina victims could have really used this knowledge.

    redcross.org lists course availability.

I grew up in Mich and my dad was a small town EMT, which I was his practice dummy (lol) oh well, I learned alot from him practicing on me.
I have looked at the wilderness first aid also now because having a large family and the fact accidents hardly ever happen at home around here.

If you guys are going to get together for classes so we have a good group number, let me know.
I will do my best to make time for it, after all, it is only a matter of life or death.

    Damn.......

The UK is SOOOOO far behind, it's not even funny.

I've been trained in First Aid for a while and renewed it once (your qualification lasts for 3 years over here). Never really thought of the outdoor implications of injuries. Then again, nothing bad has ever really happened to me (so far) when I've been out there.

Think I'll have to get back to the drawing board and work through some scenarios. Got a good medical kit in my bug-out bag, it might need a wee look at though.

    FF.

Thanks for the link NightSniper :)

I was looking through the course locations and there are a few in North Carolina :)

    Awesome!

Worked in the medical field for a few years before I went back to skinning and pulling wires. Definately need a refresher course

    Thanks again:)
