  • .22 vs. 9mm

To start off, I put 9mm in the subject, but lets leave it open for all calibers.
We have determined in other threads that a .22 is probably a lot more effective than anyone thought. I can pull up my .22 handgun and fire off 10 rounds with accuracy twice as fast as I can with a 9mm. With that being said does it make more sense to carry a .22 as a sidearm?

Being a 9mm and .22 fan...I'd have to say that I would not recommend carrying a .22 as your primary sidearm, unless concealment is an issue. While the .22 makes an effective deterrent, and can be quite well used for defense...it does lack real stopping power per shot...The main reason I wanted a P22 is the concealment factor, but after finding the CW9, I just want one to plink with and teach my daughter....

Still, with all that being said.....a .22 pistol is still my choice for a backup, if ever I can get around to finding one I like...

Any more thoughts on this one? I am glad to hear from Big Saw on this, but his initials are B.S.

I believe the biggest difference in 9MM and .22 is kenetic energy. If I understand it correctly, kenetic energy is the force that is experienced when a round hits the body. The larger the caliber the more impact and force it is going to have upon hitting the body. This is why so many people like the .45. That being said, a .22 IMHO will kill as good as a 9MM but may not stop an enemy in his tracks. Personally, if I'm shot with a .22 I going to be real discouraged from whatever I had on my mind to do.

See there...pretty much the same thing I said, and his initials aren't BS......

I like the .22. One of my favorite firearms is an old Ruger single six. However, it is not a real good defense weapon. However, I feel the same about a 9mm. Get a .38 special.

I like a .22 but only as a very concealable backup. I like the Beretta Bobcat. Ordered a few more clips Sunday.

My favorite carry is a Beretta Model 1934 in .380 (short 9mm). Sweet little gun.
JUST CURIOUS? PRUNES ARE DEHYDRATED PLUMS. SO WHERE DOES PRUNE JUICE COME FROM?

I have 2 North American Arms 22's. One is 22LR and the other is a 22mag. the 22LR is a great pocket gun and the mag is a boot gun. Both are very concealable and great in the summer time. The 22LR is loaded with fragmenting rounds and hollow points for the mag.

We also have 2 H&R 22's with interchangable 22mag cylinders. We can practice with the 22LR and keep them loaded with the mags for house guns.
You can't get here from there. ;)

While the .22 is definitely not considered a man-stopper or a primary defensive weapon, it does beat throwing rocks (by a considerable margin I might add). That said anyone struck by 10 .22 hollowpoints in the body and face is going to have to be damned determined to continue an attack or be jacked up on PCP one. But I'd rather have something a little more substantial for the job, preferably something beginning with a "4" . Just my opinion!

The fact of the matter is any gun in your hand is going to discourage an attacker. Of course its a tradeoff. If I knew in advance that I was going to be in a fight I would either not go there or take a 12 gage with 00B or an AK.

                        .22 lr v. 9mm

                        1. a firearm is a tool, just like comparing a hammer to a saw- what is the application?

You already know it. So, you don't use a 9mm to take a rabbit, if you intend to eat it.

                        2. a discussion of caliber alone avoids a discussion of skill level. Very few people ever pay for a skills class - and when shtf, they won't be far up the food chain.

In January, I was at a public range. Two nice guys were shooting AR15s at 20 yards, standing. They were shooting two foot patterns with a weapon that has a military standard acceptance of three inch groups at 100 yards. This describes most people and their skills level.

A civilian's encounter with danger will be at grappling distance. It will not be in a Red Dawn scenario. At that distance, neither caliber will probably be a manstopper that will avoid physical contact.

                        3. I concluded a long time ago that hypothetical discussions about kinetic energy were useless. If a guy doesn't have skills, he is going to miss. If he has skills, he understands human ergonomics, human physiology and biology and it won't matter what caliber that he uses.

                        4. The .22lr is more versatile, the ammunition is lighter, the ammunition is cheaper and it wins.

while i like the 22 and it is a great back up for the backup of the backup i think the 9mm is a great backup to the primary weapon which should be no smaller than a 500 smith just sayin

As I told my son. "A 22 bullet that goes exactly where you wanted it to is more effective than a 10 second burst from the Vulcan cannon on an A-10 that misses." I bet it would discourage trespassers though.

I understand, but if you know a source for a vulcan I'm interested :D
