  • Range time...

Well...went out to the property w/the wife, a buddy from my former life, and my foreman - who is interested in pistols, but is thus far, a pistol-virgin

Had a great time burning up about 700 rds with 3 pistols (2 Ruger P89DCs and a Kahr CW9), and about 2000 rds with Shawn's little .22 custom-made Ruger 10/22 FA rifle.

Again, I found myself favoring the new Kahr 9mm over my old friend, the Ruger...Even w/the slender frame, and it being a relatively new feel and weapon for me, I scored much higher with it than with the pistol I've used for over a decade.

I just can't say enough good things about this little 9mm.

Anyway....Josh, my foreman (AKA "Pyrocrazed"), got to experience his first-ever pistol shoot, and I think I've created a monster. This kid's a natural, and actually took "top shooter" today with my weapon. He's convinced now, and will be picking up his own P89DC later next week.;)

Now my wife (Former USMC MP) made sure to dress for the occasion - probably to avoid being mistaken for a deer????? And took second honors out of the field today.

Shawn actually got so worn out shooting his 10/22, he abstained from the match round and just played with the Kahr until he ran out of 9mm ammo.

I got pretty worn playing with the 10/22, as well, but thought I might be able to show up the kiddies....boy was I wrong......I actually scored lowest, but still had a great time out...

Here's to a tradition that's older than baseball......and a helluva lot more fun, IMHO.

Sounds like you folks had a great day. I need to get out to the range and get some time in... it's been a while sine I dedicated a day to it... leading up to hunting season (in NH that's Nov into Dec) me and my hetero life partner go shooting about twice or more a week....here's a little game we play. take a six pack of nasty soda (we use polar cola cherry or cranberry at about 5 bucks a case) first he takes a six pack down range and hides them in brush or behind a berm or a post or something... all over and the trick is for me to come in and find the aggressors and eliminate them. we do it at 100 and 200 yards ( it's all we have for range) Up here in NH it's tough to find a clear shot at over 50 let alone out to 4, 5, or 6 hundred... I see more deer within fifteen than I do past 75. Anyway, it's one of the things we do... also we do long range pistol 100 yards. .45s you need to artillery in basically, but Monty (my colt python) is pretty damn accurrate out to a hundred. off hand I am hitting clay pigeons and soda cans... not every shot... but if I don't hit it I kill it of a heart attack! Anyway, thanks for sharing your range time fun. I'll try to get some pictures next time we go and share the experience.

Hey, we do the same thing when we take the rifles out!!!

Huh....small world, man. I would like to hear about more people getting in range time.....if you're not practicing w/your weapons, it's surprising how fast you can become a "stale" shootist.

      BTW...300ft w/a pistol is freaking insane!!

Well the cool thing about the Kahr is (like any Glock) you really do have to intend to fire the weapon for it to go off, or at least hit the trigger with the MOTHER OF ALL SNAGS when you re-holster, etc. As long as you carry w/a good holster w/integrated trigger cover and pay attention when you holster the thing, you oughtta be fine;).

FYI....I carry exclusively w/Fobus holsters, 'cause they're comfy, light, molded perfectly to the weapon, inexpensive, durable, fast, and cover that trigger well!!

And as far as my shooting goes....I ain't no gun-god. Show me a guy who scores 10s all day, every day, and I'll take you to Hoffa's body :D.

If you ever get up this way just say the word and we can go to the range... we have heated shoot shacks. In the summer the fronts come off (four plywood sheets act as walls) So you have plenty of room... in the winter there are plexi sliders that open to shoot out of... We found that shooting big bore in doors is really really loud! ha ha but with the windows in and if no one is around we will sometimes do some shoot and move to another window and shoot and move to another window.. and shoot and exit and shoot... we do it really slow... and gradually work up to going a bit faster... kind of like Tai Chi with a .45... get it in muscle memory then it will be there when you need it. Anyway, the offer is there if you want to come up and shoot some cans.

oh and the three hundred foot pistol practice is for real... but I think it is more the gun than the operator... Monty ( a Colt Python) is just fabulous! I would highly recommend this wheel gun to anyone who wants high quality. But you will pay for it!

have fun... shoot straight... be safe

yea I heard about those... very... er... ummm ... impressive ha ha ha

I wish we had something here that was a bit longer... the only long range that I know of is 600 yards.. which is good but it is at a club that I don't belong to and don't know anyone who belongs to it... maybe I'll join just to go a few times a year. I reall want to bring my M1 and M1A out to let them stretch their legs so to speak.... We have a shack at our club that is close to 200 yards ... and I'll tell you that the tomato sauce cans look pretty small out there. I usually use an old tee-shirt for that range... if you hang it from the shoulders without a back board behind it you can kind of determine where your shots are from the way it reacts to the bullet... it's a silouette of sorts (which by the way are illegal in MA aka Evil Empire) and when you are done with shooting it up you can use it to clean the guns...

as for the Free Staters... I heard about them coming... but ... not to be an a$$hole or anything... I'd rather not have more people move into the state... we're pretty small and I keep seeing more and more forest being destroyed for McMansions that end up being for people who come here because they don't like where they were and for the peace and tranquility and rural atmosphere and then they try to change it to like where they were from!... "It's not safe to not have sidewalks... Little Billy got scared walking home because there were no street lights.... These dirt roads are ruining the paint on my Beemer, Mercedes, Lexus blah blah blah" I guess the Free Staters are not of that sort ... but more people = less resources

We have a public 100yrd range near me. We buy a box of paint balls and throw them out everywhere and have a ball with the 10/22. Give it a try, it's a blast.
