  • 9mm or .40

I am looking at two different handguns to buy either a .40 S&W Sigma or a 9mm SIG Sauer. I know that the .40 has a heavy trigger pull. Any help would be much appreciated.

really depends on what your purpose is, and if this is your only firearm etc

But as a Blanket statement I'd say go with the .40 FAR superior stopping power.

But let's hear more about your needs and purpose

It's a hard one to call but I like the 9mm for rapid shot recovery time, round count and w/quality +P ammo it will do the job

This will be sidearm for anything. This will be my main weapon for the moment as I got my place broken into and my guns cleaned out. I will be re-buying my rifles as I can but I am still looking for those. I know the pistol is just a stop gap solution.

This will be used as mostly a personal defense weapon.

Sorry to hear about a break-in. I go with 9mm, but that is because I do not own a .40 and have several 9mm's. Consider that if you plan to purchase more in the future.

The 1911 isn't in the line up? .... Browning Highpower 9mm or it's clone then.

I would love a 1911 that would be it if I had the money for it right now. that is on the wish list for later on but, of course first I must get my rifles set up.

                What he said! I love a 1911

Seriously though, I would go with the 9mm just for ammunition availability, even though I find the 40 to be a more desirable round... I know you can walk into WallyWorld and find boxes of both, but in my neck of the woods, the 9mm is far more common. Plus, if you ever decide to sell it to get that 1911, the 9mm should move faster than a 40.

Good luck and sorry for your recent losses.

When the ammo crunch was on, in mmy area .40 S&W was easier to find than the 9mm. HK all the way.

I bought that same .40 cal and I have been very pleased so far. I've put about 125 rounds through it and I'll take it over a 9mm anytime. Just my personal preference. I used a beretta 9mm and a 1911 during my Army days and I'm pleased with the .40 for my personal sidearm for now until I can step up when the finances allow.

While I agree with most everyone that has posted in this thread that the .40 and .45 have much more stopping power than a 9mm, I would stilll get the 9mm. The ammo will be easy to find when TSHTF, relatively speaking of course. If you prepare by buying some +P or JHP then you will still have decent stopping power plus a bunch more rounds in the magazine compared to the .40 and .45.

Ok I have owned several different models and cal. I have decided to go with the .40 for the stoping power.now with that said the +p 9mm is a good round. I always look at replacement parts. Are easy to get in a pinch are they popular in my area. How easy are they maintain. Stopping power is just one question in many you should ask. These are just my thoughts, not worth much but I hope it helps
