i just was given a brand new .38 special made by taurus dont know much about it but it was free so who cares lol
i would like to know a little bit about my new toy if anyone has information or tips or what you think about this gun let me know thanks
Hmmm, just wondering out loud here, why did they just give it away, especially nowadays with everybody hoarding and stocking up? Is it hot? Is it stolen? Be careful, man!
If it looks ignernt, but it works, then it ain't ignernt.

now .38 is not my prefered weapon of choice(9mm) but do they make hollow points for 38?
Sure they make hollowpoints.
38 was a police round for many, many, years.
I sure as hell wouldn't want to be shot with one.
Personally, I think it is an underated cartridge
Go practice with it, shot placement and speed to a followup round is key
to any firearm.

Of course they make hollowpoints in .38 special.
I use Federal Tactical Hydrashock in all my handguns as a defensive round (except .32 which I use Corbon hollowpoints)
If you can find them, they make them in 38, 9mm, 45, 40SW, 357.
The Tactical are the same as the ones you can buy at the store in 20 round boxes for personal defense except packages in 50 round boxes for law enforcement, A 20 round civilian box usually runs about $20, while a 50 round LE box is usually 25-30 dollars. Unfortunately the smaller boxes is the only thing I am finding available lately, so I am holding off on any more, I have at least 500 each in 9mm, 38, and 45.
There are many, many options for 38 hollowpoints. Pick any quality one and you should do well. On the upside, with a revolver you don't have feeding issues, so any good premium hollowpoint is good. Some autos have problems with certain bullet profiles but a revolver has no such issues.
So buy some Winchester Silvertip, Speer Gold Dot, Federal Hydrashock, Corbon Hollowpoints, or any good premium ammo and then grab some cheap FMJ of LRN and practice.
My weapon can kill, it isn't limited to mere assault
I hope you told your Dad thank-you! Taurus makes very dependable guns (Lifetime warranty to boot) the .38spl has been around along time and will be for a long time to come. Accurate, easy to shoot decent power for protection. I recommend a .38 revolver to lots of gun newbies and for people wanting something for protection but don't shoot enough to get proficient with an auto.
The plus's for the revolver are: reliable! doesn't jam, miss-feed ect, if you ever have to defend yourself with the thing (high stress situation here!) you dont have to figure out is the saftey on, is a round chambered, do I have to work the slide????, no pick it up pull the trigger it goes bang , bang , bang until empty. Every body needs at least 1!

Some Taurus 85's are +P, be sure to check if yours is or not and remember that when buying ammo for it. Putting +P ammo in a regular gun could cause a nasty accident.
Not knowing the model it's hard to judge, but Taurus has made reliable revolvers for many, many years. Thier small frame guns are very comparable to S&W J-frames and their medium frames are just as good. I've owned a Model 85 since 1987 and have never had a problem with it. I owned a Model 82 (6 shot medium frame) and a Model 66 (a copy of the S&W Model 19) and never felt undergunned at all.
The .38 Special is a very versatile and effective round. There are more loads for this caliber than for any other caliber I can think of - from very soft shooting 148 gr. full wadcutters for target shooting to some super high velocity JHP for defensive use. The only reason the 38 was surpassed by automatics for police use was the perceived need for more rounds. I've always said "6 for sure" and a medium frame .38 will always be among my favorites!
Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he's too old to fight, he'll just kill you.
