  • .22 Balistic Testing

I got tired of hearing people put down .22

Yes kids hunt with it, yes some adults do too, yes it's used for target shooting because it's cheap. BUT for those who say humph it's just a .22, I say ok, can i shoot you with one then? Answer is usually no lol.

So I was bored, went out back and did some ballistics testing.

    Here we go

    Exhibit 1.

Piece of very thing diamond plate in front of a piece of walboard.

    Exhibit 2. A brick

    test 3. is a 4x4
Note: None appeared to go all the way through

Test 4. 2 boards lined up in front of each other
One shot went half way through the second board. Boards appear to be an inch and a half thick or so each.

I never doubted it. Like I said before, the last murder in our little town was done with a .22 rifle. The combination of soft tissue and bone cause the little critters to run around in your body doing severe damage. Just for fun facts to know and tell we had another murder in Albemarle today (adjacent town where I live). Drive by, 24 year old young man using a 9mm killed a guy on the street corner. Black on black crime seems to never end. :(

Good job D. I think this link has been posted before, but cant seem to find it.

This guy did a great test out to 300 yards. Confirmed, what I already knew. I have taken many coyotes and feral dogs with a 10/22 and S&W 422. Out as far as 200 yards. Most 1 shot kills. These days with bullets up to 60 grain for the 22, they can be a formidable weapon. Then again, it all depends on the shooter.

Very cool...no doubt in the right hands, the .22 is a formidable and versatile hunting weapon....and the mob has done a great job of setting it's record as a man-killer. Anyone who doubts it's utility is just inexperienced and ignorant. Cool post, D.

When I was a kid, I had a buddy of mine shoot me with a .25 auto. My letterman jacket stopped it. It really did not hurt.

a .25 is slow compared to rifle rounds (even .22lr) The jacket may have acted just as kevlar does, dissipating the power. Just a guess. Weirder things have happened.

Thanks for the test...and pics! It helped me to further justify my .22 fetish. Started collecting .22 rifles and pistols just because the ammo was/is cheap, you can carry a lot of it, and they can be just as effective in the right hands.

Over the years and across the country. There has been a lot of Venison put on the table with a 22 rifle. My Dad and his uncles would only rabbit hunt with a 22 single hot. They said, if you couldn't hit 'em with that you should just stay home. LOL

I knew a guy who popped 2 VC with his Highstandard 22mag derringer at point blank range, saved his life. I think rimfires are underrated.

most of the people I've heard raggin' on the .22 are referring to it's usefulness in pocket pistols. I tend to agree with the idea that it's just not up to the task of serious self defense in small pistols due to the lack of velocity and resulting lack of penetration---but out of a rifle? That's a whole 'nother ball of wax--inside 100 yds anyway. I've shot enough coyotes and dispatched enough farm critters to know that I sure as heck don't want to get shot with a .22.

There's no way it'll get any real penetration with only a 2" barrel--let alone the 14" penetration recommended by the FBI.....but I'm not about to give that a try myself. (Rusty, want to loan us your letterman jacket for a test? I can probably find a pocket .22 pretty easily! LOL)

I have a friend, retired Military. His opinion of the best SHTF gun is a very accurate .22 lr rifle with a good scope. His rational is "I can put 2 thousand rounds of ammo in my pack, grab the rifle and run with it, dot my enemy in the eye at 100 yards, and take his rifle and ammo! Makes you think!
