Being the OLDEST MF here I can remember when the M-16 came out, I was still issued an M-1 rifle, all the Old Guard hated it as a pip-squeek round, anything smaller than 30 cal was fer P*ssys. In Nam bad ammo hurt the 5.56 rep even though it would tear-up a target when it did connect. It was not untill heavier bullet and powder combos came out that the round established itself. Still there are PPL that think any round that will not punch through 8"s of concrete at 350 meters is worthless. Opinions are like ashholes,.Last edited by kenno; 12-27-2009, 11:24 PM.The road to serfdom is paved with free electric golf carts.

5.56 ammunition was designed to wound soldiers as opposed to killing them. The thought is that wounding an enemy is more detrimental in combat, because one wounded solider requires the attention of atleast 2 soliders/medics to treat and evacuate the wounded. I personally have zero interest in .22 I mean 5.56 rounds ;) and don't own a single round.WHAT IF THE AMERICA YOU KNEW, WAS ABOUT TO CHANGE?

The 223 is a very devistating round. In balistic gel they discovered that it tumbles end over end. When the round hits a bone it tends to follow it. Internally the round causes major damage. The round is light to carry allowing an individual to double there loadout ability. Its a great tool to keep in the box.

Centurion - .223 was not designed to kill for every gel test u can find u find find 5 more that show other things. Hell it's a fast .22 basically.WHAT IF THE AMERICA YOU KNEW, WAS ABOUT TO CHANGE?

The man speaks truth, but I'll still stick with smaller bores.....they're longer lasting, IMO...lighter, easier to pack ammo, and just as lethal as the larger cals with sufficient training....Head, heart, lung or liver: dead meat...it don't matter if you're using a .17 or a 7.62....but everyone's gonna vary on opinions, logistics, employment, etc....ballistics are inarguable, though...you want more range and/or easier kills, you get the bigger bore...."I Have Sworn Upon the Altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man." -Thomas Jefferson

Well Diesel I can see how you would compare the two, .22 and the .223(similar numbers) however, there are some differences. A .22 is either solid or hollowpoint lead with a round head.
The .223 NATO round has a lead center but is coated in copper and has a sharp point. The 556 travels alot faster then a .22 and has the same penitration as larger calibers.
I have never come across any literature that said the .223 was designed to wound. Wow, and to think when I was issued one and used it in combat I was only sopposed to wound the other guy with it. They really messed up on that one.
