I had a similar first impression...

The one in seven inch twist rate twenty inch barrel is optimised to stablize the heavier grain weight rounds. The lighter rounds (55 grain) tend to yaw before exiting and will on occasion fragment, though fragmentation is not an intended design feature. Wounds tend to be more severe. The heavier bullets (62, 69, 75 grain) provide better penetration slighty more mass and kenetic energy. Under most circumstances (comparable target distance) they don't yaw/fragment before existing.

The subject of best defensive rounds has been discussed before here:

Hornady TAP, Federal Tru, M855 have been recommended for those with AR-15/M-16 platforms utilizing the faster twist rate 1 x 7 inch barrels.

Congrats and Good Luck with the new firearm.

My first AR, ca. 1989, was a Colt with a 20-inch 1/7 barrel. It LOVED 62 gr. Match HPs. My current AR is an LEO Bushy lower with an RRA middy 1/7 upper. I'm hoping it will like Federal's 62 grain Tactical loads.
