My little rifle is a great shooter. To be honest, I've never fed it anything lighter than 62gr, so I'm not sure how the 55's would land. If I had to do it all over again, I think I would build a mid-length. though I've never shot one, I hear they are much smoother than the carbine's. I guess I can always keep an eye out for a mid-length upper, and slap it on when the wife isn't looking.

My AR's are the original Colt. All the ammo I have is for the original twist barrel. One has a telescoping buttstock. They both shoot fine, and neither has a push button on the side, either. I guess I am old fashioned.

My M4 is a bushmaster full milspec. gets very tight groups for stock off-the shelf. Paid well under $1k and its got full Magpul furniture & accessories. The comparable colt cost way more and not any better. My 6.8 has Mega Arms upper and lower receivers (top notch quality), ARP custom barrel and BCG, and I built the rest out myself. Total cost also around $1k. Its a tack driver and a hogzilla for sure! As an alternative to AR15.com forums, you should check out 68forums.com. They support ALL black rifles as well. Very knowledgable and helpful peeps there, as evidenced by the ease with which I built my 6.8!
