Okay so I have been on the hunt for a Colt LE AR-15 for about............. 6 months or so. Im getting a little frustrated because is everyone sold out, or not available, or "hey sorry, we just sold the last one 5 minutes ago." Its getting pretty aggravating. Any suggestions other than, keep looking?

Second question: I have always known colt to be a great mfgr. Any others out there that are among the same level in the AR field. (I know everyone has their opinions on what is best and so forth.) All I am really looking for at this point is a very dependable AR style rifle.

Bushmaster, DPMS, Smith Wesson, Stag Arms, RRA and Saber Defense make great AR-15 firearms. I would strongly recommend that whatever AR firearm you decide upon, you get one that is chambered to accept the military's 5.56 x 45 chambering. This way it will readily except the civilian .223 cal chambering. Some people prefer unchromed lined barrels manufactured out of 4140 chrome moly steel to enhance accuracy. Most prefer to go the chrome lined route to prolong barrel life and enchance corrosion resistance like the military does. The accuracy difference I have found between the two is minute. I tend to lean towards the chromed lined/stainless barreled firearms.

To have a very dependable AR means that it must be broken-in well, kept meticulously cleaned, reliable high quality mags and mag followers, quality ammunition and the knowledge to run it the right way. As an example, we had a customer come in to our store complianing about his new Smith & Wesson AR-15. He was complaining about failures to extract and jamming. After inspecting the firearm and discussing what he was shooting through it, I sold him a case of Georgia Arms brand ammo. He called me back before he even got home to thank me and tell me his firearm was functioning flawlessly. I did not know that we had not even sold him the gun! Quality mags and & Ammo are a must.

Does the gun have stellar accuracy? Yes! Is it 100 perecent dependable? 95 percent of the time if well maintained. That's why I strongly recommend that anyone owing an AR-15 learn everthing about it and learn how to run it/operate it in the event of a possible malfunction. Clearing drills is the best way. Good luck.

I am deffinately more for the chrome lined barrels. I know of several people that go the other way on it, but longer barrel life just sounds better to me. I will do my best to find the ones chambered for the 5.56, and will be shooting, only top quality .223. Thanks for the info guys, from what I have learned from you guys, and a couple others in the past hour or two, it seems I now have several options... Man I love this site!

I was looking at the Colt LE online, thats an expensive AR. I understand paying more for something you want, but if you are looking for a high quality AR, you don't have to spend that much. Now if you want that particular brand and model, then good for you and I totally understand. I have some high dollar toys that I enjoy and it doesn't matter why. My 67 mustang convertible will never be practical in the least bit, but it is a huge amount of fun.
I have a pre-ban Colt AR from the 1970's that many people tell me to put away, but it still goes to the range with me and puts perfect holes in paper like the others. Good luck in your hunt.
He who lives with the most toys, wins.

                  Ok,

I have a Colt LE 6920 that I'm issued and have to carry at work. Its a good rifle, but it is not carried by choice. The trigger on my 6920 is HORRIBLE compared to others. I'd much rather carry my Rock River personal rifle instead. You are paying dearly for "COLT" stamped on the side. Just a suggestion. Check out other manufacturers like was suggested in a previous post. I own several AR platforms including Colt's and my favorites by far are Rock River, Bushmaster and Stag. They put together as nice of an AR as you can buy and do that for a fair price. Good luck and happy hunting. Also, you should check out CDNN investments in Abilene Texas. Just google them for their website. They have a pretty good stock of Colt LE rifle's if thats your cup of tea.;)

It's alright SAW, my response was half joking anyways. No offense taken at all.

I mainly chose colt, because those that I know who own them, who have owned some others like DPMS, just say they overall prefer the colt. For some reason I have it in my head that Colt was basically top of the line, and most reliable. Not sure how it got there....

I would love the chance to line up several different mfgrs of the AR and test fire about 100 rounds through each, but I dont think I know anybody, or several people who own the different brands. For now I will keep looking around, and see whats out there. The staff at the indoor range here in Gboro, they are all some great guys, and I will see if I can get them to let me test one out ;)

Please keep in mind that range guns are not necessarily the best firearms to draw conclusions from. I own Colt, Bushmaster, DPMS and Franken ARs (Amalgation of parts) AR-15s. My sons AR-15 that I built out of spare parts, runs equally as well as the name brand ones. Even better I think. If you stick with any of the name brands you'll find they are about the same. Some may have better triggers than others, but this is an easy fix. Note: Many manufactures get their parts/subassemblies (Outsourced) from other AR-15 manufactures with their respective names on the reciever! 99.999 Percent of all AR-15 parts will readily integrate into another AR without any adjustments orther than checking head space.

Good to know. I had a guy tell me once something similar about glocks. Badically that he coul build one, all except for the barrell for less than twenty bucks. Kind of amusing they run anywhere from 415-600 here.

About the AR's at the range, I should have clarified a little better. The rifles they have up there are not for rental by any means. The guys up there as far as I know have them for WTSHTF senarios. I have fired some handguns at other ranges. That should have left me being called "Lefty" as Rusty would say :D

If it is their Sweet 16 heavy barrel it does not have a forward bolt assist or brass deflector. Not my first choice for an S & P AR-15, but lately pickins have been pretty slim with these style firearms since they are being snatched up alomost as fast as they are being manufactured.

If you can wait and save some more cash, this is what you want to get when they are released late this year: H&K MR556.

Money is coming out of my ETS (everything turns to shit) stash to get one of these.
