5.45x39 mags are getting hard to find and EXPENSIVE...

You ain't kidding they are getting harder to find and expensive. K-Var's Mag won't work (Too Thick). These mags are going to be converted with .223 followers and minor mill work so they can fit and operate in a .223 Molot VEPR II. Great firearm albeit a heavy son of gun. Second link May do the trick. Found some also at: sksman.com

    Thanks for the links BTW.

Ditto on the Promags (you could not give me one) Mec Gar is a good aftermarket magazine manufacturer. They manufacture many of the magazines for firearms manufactures (They just don't put their name on it). Good luck with your mag purchase. I'm going to next weeks Gun Show here looking for the same Bulgarian mags except in 5.45 x 39.

Bulgarian mags or any Bulgarian firearm or accessories for that matter are pretty much manufactured to high quality standards. In many cases even better than original Russian quality standards. Concerning AKS magazines I would avoid Promag or any other manufacturer that does not incorporate the metal front and rear capture lips/taps on their Composite, Polymer or Bakelite magazines. With reference to Bulgarian mags I have noticed that some will not readily fit into the mag well of some AKS firearms. In many cases this is usally/easily corrected with minor filing/fitting of the mag well sides. Take care not to remove too much material. This problem is usally seen with the "CLEAR" waffle type Bulgarian mags. This is not a fault of the magazine or manufacturer. Not all AKS firearms are manufactured to the same exacting standards of other firearms. Tolerances will vary. I would make sure that whoever you purchse your mags from, that they have a return policy if they don't fit or tolerances are unworkable. Original metal mags are just about bullet proof albeit slightly heavier.

Its been a long time since I owned a soviet patterned rifle, but the metal magazines worked just fine. they didn't seem picky at all like an AR15.

i don't think I ever had a magazine related problem with the steel eastern block (cheap) magazines.

I don't advocate cheapies for most guns, but they were designed that way in this case.
