I am no expert but I do have some experience.
When my grandfather died in the 1970's he had a basement full of guns and ammo. Almost all the ammo was purchased in mid-December 1941, following Pearl Harbor. Grandpaw's farm was in a semi-arid area. The basement had excelent drainage and ventilation.
The ammo was stored in it's original carboard boxes, some was sitting out, some was in a drawer of a wooden desk and gun cabinet or in a open toped wooden shotgun ammo box.
The paper hulled 12 ga ammo was about 50% good, this seemed to depend on the brand and if it had a wax coating. Pistol and rifle ammo was about 80% good. 22LR did not fare so well, with lots of mis-fires.Last edited by kenno; 01-13-2009, 09:04 AM.The road to serfdom is paved with free electric golf carts.Comment

I've recently shot (without a single misfire) .45 and .38s loaded and packaged by Georgia Arms 18-20 years ago. They have been in the bottom of a gun safe in the house. I recently purchased another caliber in bulk and they were delivered in an ammo can. I plan to get the vac sealer going this weekend!JUST CURIOUS? PRUNES ARE DEHYDRATED PLUMS. SO WHERE DOES PRUNE JUICE COME FROM?Comment

well thats why I would just rotate. target shoot with the old stuff...You just need to be able to replace what you take from ur stash..... What I try to do is replace what I took plus1 box and even more if I can...... I have never shot any ammo that was over a couple years old.proper preparedness prevents poor performanceComment

Nah, the little plastic boxes they use to store sensitive radio equipment, etc....they're naval, I think, 'cause the bast*rds are air-tight, and hard to pop the lids off....seems like they'd survive water depths of up to a million atmospheres...lol...Originally posted by kenno View Post

I've only done some .22 so far. Most of my stash is Federal 550 boxes, so I've sealed it loose in 100/200/550 count bags, and I vac it snug but cut the vacuum before it get's too tight.Comment

I have a lot of milsurp that is stored in ammo cans and made in the 70's and it still shoots great....Wolverines!!!:DComment
