I've made 3 bury tubes so far. These are 4" pvc and 32" long. I haven't buried any of them yet, but one is full of ammo that I vacuum sealed with my foodsaver. I used screw-in clean out caps on mine, so I won't have to pull the tube to retrieve the contents. I cut pieces of edpm roofing membrane to cover the cap before final coverage with dirt.
6" diameter would be a must for a long gun and stock, still...most would need to be done like the article said...barreled action out of the stock in order to fit.
There's so much info online about bury tubes that this definately won't be a secret if "they" come looking...so I have devised ways to make the use of metal detectors very very frustrating to any would be seekers. -

One must also consider HOW they will bury some items when the need arises... Digging a 48" deep hole is hard enough... one may want to look into an earth auger for an easier method...73

I was able to justify the purchase of a PTO post hole digger for our iddy biddy Kubota last week when we decided to put up 950' of fencing (neighbor is afraid my boxer will swallow her shi-tzu). It will only dig 42" deep, but better than nothing.Originally posted by Zombie Axe View Post
I do plan to pre-bury mine...the screw-in lids will allow me to fill or empty at any time, without the need to remove the tube. The only thing about the article writer's tube was that it basically needed to be removed from the ground to be opened, and pre-packed to be buried.Comment

Stuph I've read on bury tubes.
If you bury them vertically, do so in a fence line, under a fence post. Easy to remember, hard for the metal detectors to locate.
If you bury them horizontally, place small boulders over them, or a heavy concrete bench, log, ect.
No matter how you bury, throw the metal detector guys off by burying LOTS of scrap iron pipe, the length of a rifle, all over your property.
Bury them in a dog kennel, under stepping stones, under a well head cover, or just above underground pipes leading to your home (gas, water supply lines <be carefull!>).
You can also cap the bury site with a false septic cleanout cover or water meter cover.
Bury tubes can also be placed in hollow trees, stumps, or even painted camo and placed in the top of trees.Comment
