  • Ruger 10/22 & Henry Survival 22

I have not purchased a firearm since the early 90's. So any thought or input is greatly appreciated.

I just looked at a Henry survival 22 (breaksdown & 2 - 10 round mags store in the stock) I am thinking about putting one in my truck ($240)

What caught my eye was a Ruger 10/22 carbine, folding stock, 30 round bananna - plastic clip ($250).

I had a SKS once and the composite clip always hung up, so I'm not sure about a plastic clip.

Please let me know what your experience has been.- Thanks

From what I've read...the bannana mags with the metal feed lips are ok. I have one (Ramline I think) never had any problems with it, but I kinda prefer to have several factory 10 rounders...that bannana just looks vulnerable hanging down like it does, and kinda gets in the way in the prone position.

When buying 10/22 mags, stick with Buttler Creek Hot Lips or Metal Lips. They feed without problem. Metal are a little better than Hot lips, but they cost more and you would have to fire 10s of thousands of rounds to wear out the Hot lips. Ideally, factory Ruger mags are the way to go, but limit you to 10rds. Stay away from Eagle and Pro Mag, CRAP. Ramline are ok, but I found them to start jamming after a few thousand rounds.

Cheapest I've paid was $23.50 each, but I bought 15. That was in October. Now, I see them on Gun Broker starting at $28. I'll poke around and see what some of my suppliers get for them.

Well, I checked all the suppliers I buy from, and Midway seems to have the best price. Everybody else start at $28.95 and go up to 39.95.

After posting this, I went back to Midways site, and it says these mags have been discontinued! I need to look into this!

Final edit! Buttler Creeks website nolonger offers 25rd mags. Made a call to a buddy with a gunshop, said buy what you can before they dry up!

In my opinion there is no other .22 than the Ruger 10/22... I've had one for decades... never a problem. Agree with what others have said about magazines.

The Henry is a neat rifle, to be sure, and the breakdown capability has it's merits, but the Ruger 10/22 is PROVEN.....time and time again.

Usually, if you find anyone who has something contrary to say about the 10/22, it's either low-grade ammo, cheap mags, or user malfunction.

Those are Eagles. Complete CRAP! I have been trying to find out more on why they discontinued the 25s, no luck. I'll email Buttler and see what the say. Walmart stopped carrying 10/22 mags last Spring, yet they still sell the gun.

Yeah...I get a bunch of stuff from the Sportsman's Guide, but you gotta be careful with 'em and keep an eye out for quality....they like to put some real crap off as high-end......experience speaking.
