  • Need advice on buying guns

Ok this might turn into a rant but I am really mad, I decided to buy me a brand new shotgun. I have never bought a new one before so off I go to the store, fill out all this paperwork and when the guy calls he tells me "we have a delay" Ok well that was way back LAST DECEMBER. I have checked back with the store several times and again today and I am still "on hold". I have only had two speeding tickets in my entire life and they were 10 years ago. I called my uncle who is a detective with a large city and asked me if I have with drawn any large amounts of cash? what gives? I told him I live debt free and yes I saved up and bought my truck, the wifes car and cars for the kids and took anywhere from 10 to 15 k out at a time, he says ah you cant do that I bet the feds will not let you buy any kind of gun. WTF is this counrty coming to? I am standing there as clean as any american can be with cash in hand and standing beside me are three dudes with mr "T" starter kits around their necks, baggy paints, sideways hats, dope dealers or I will kiss you butt and they each bought a hand gun and one bought the exact same shot gun I was wanting.

Ok with all that said and if you are still with me, thanks, any sugestions as to where I can go buy me some guns? I have bought a 12 ga pump and a 40 cal glock from a buddy of mine and he has invited me to go to some gun shows with him but will I be put "on hold" at a gun show also? I am so mad right now, this is just not right. And to top it off I went to another store to try to buy a new gun and the guy at the counter told me if I have applied for a gun at another store and was "on hold" it was a crime for me to even fill out the paper work to get another one.

Thanks for any help, I would like to get a large cal rifle for when the shot gun and my glock are out of range, and oh I live in South Carolina.

Maybe your wife can buy the gun in her name and let you use it. That is the best legal suggestion that I have!

      Thanks,

Well I guess that is something I could try but you know that will double my cost, she will want something too. I am already getting the why do you need so many bullets thing.

What really makes me mad is I have had a lot of background checks with the work I do and the only problem I have had is on one background check they did not beleive I was born, raised, went to school and work with in the same 20 mile radius my entire life.

The real problem is I saved my money and haggled to buy my truck and bought a 17k truck for 12k but I paid in cash. and I did the same thing for the wifes car, now I am suspect because I took out so much money, but I buy and sell old Barracudas as my hobby and only take cash also its too easy to get ripped off, I only deal in clear titles and cash and its a done deal.
I am just mad because our government is keeping me from buying a gun just because I save and pay as I go and now they think I am a dope dealer or worst some nut job terrist. I make good money and have no bills what do they want to do? sorry but being in debt is NOT the American way.

I do not want to keep a lot of cash at home, but should I also should not be punished for withdrawing money I have saved, this is really bumming me out:mad:

Will I be in the same situation if I go to buy at a gun show?

You certainly have a right to be angry in principle. I would suggest just buying from Joe Blow when you get the chance. Anytime I can buy from him rather than a gun store I do. The more you have that are not traceable back to you the better. I feel like you would run into the same problem at a show but I don't know for sure.

Yeah depending on your state law, if it's anything like NC you can simply buy any rifle from any individual and are not required to fill out any paperwork anywhere.

It's when you buy from a gun dealer that they are required by law to run checks etc.

          That right beebop?

I must concur 100% w/beebop. When my contract ended, I was given the option of purchasing all of my service equipment and I declined. I don't really want anyone, especially the gov't, knowing what I have, should TSHTF. Look at what happened w/Katrina. Stick with the private sale option while it's still legit. But, don't forget to swap plenty of info w/your seller, in case the gun comes up stolen, or turns up to have a history.

Should something bad happen, or have already happened w/that weapon, you'll have a private paper trail with which to exonerate yourself from any wrongdoing.

            Just my $0.02

Yes, all good advise. I keep a book with what guns I sell, who, when, for what, in it. Just in case something comes up with the gun. If you come across a gun that you think is questionable local law enforcement can run the serial number. I will be glad to do this for some, but I can't do it too often.

The law enforcement check is an excellent option if you have a patient seller, and a buddy on the force who can run an impromptu check....can't believe I never thought of that.....sometimes I feel so loopy....thanks, beebop, I have a couple of calls to make next time I make a transaction.

Pay cash, and buy from an individual. I get delayed also, because I too live by the cash principal, and I used to work for the Feds.

Hey guys thanks for all the advice, and reading my rant, honestly this was all a big shock for me. I know and admit I am tight but thought if I wanted a gun the only thing stopping me was spending the money, but I guess big brother has other plans for the average joe like me. I have put out some feelers with some buddys of mine and have a few options coming up.

Thanks again, and I really do like this web site, I have told one other "smart" buddy about it and will tell another friend whe she gets back from her winter break, this is a good networking tool to learn.

Most classified ads in SC papers have a Gun Section, at least the Greenville News paper does.
