I HAVE A MOSSY 500 DEFENSE shotgun holds 9 and one in the chamber the problem i have is some say buckshot some say birshot or slugs .... ok here is the official say from an ex marine / highway patrolman/ rangemaster rick BIRDSHOT ALL THE WAY the reason is this buckshot will penetrate the walls of your homes if you live by your self use buckshot but there should be no reason other than personal choice for a slug EXTREME PENETRATION yes if some one breaks in my house i want them exterminated but i don't want to take the wife or kids with them ya know lets here other ideas oh and the idea would be number 4's because of the mass coverage and exceptional penetration so lets here everybodies comments pro's and cons

Everyone should run whatever load they feel comfortable with in their particular situation and environment.

    My opinion:
Bird shot works well when attacked by birds.
If a load won't penetrate the paint and drywall, that most of us can and have (in a frustrating moment) put our fists through, that load is not likely to reach the vital cardio vascular and/or central nervous systems where damage is needed to put an attacker down. The FBI has determined that a minimum of 12" of penetration in ballistics gellatin is needed for a load to reach these vital systems. Based on this same research the FBI concluded that #4 buck possessed the minimum ballistics needed to be a reliable defensive load.
Please understand.... Birdshot will make a mess of the attacker. There will be plenty of noise and blood. He's going to be hurting for sure, and maybe... maybe even dead, if you have a few very lucky pellets, but more than likely he will live to fight another day. If that is your desired result, then birdshot is the load for you.
When my family's safety is in peril, I need the threat eliminated as fast as possible. Bird shot is a "possible" resolution... Buckshot is a "probable" resolution. I choose to stack the odds in my favor.

There are a ton of urban legends out there from "just racking a shotgun will make an intruder soil himself and cry for mommy" to "00 Buck will cut a man clean in half" to "I don't have to aim a shotgun because it'll spread out and cover the whole room", To "bird shot is man mangler" ... Oh and don't expect your attacker, when hit by a 12g, to fly backwards for five feet landing flat on his back like in the movies either.

I do understand the concern for over penetration and collateral damage. I do not and will not tell someone how I think they should run their weapons. I respect each person here for whatever load they choose to use, and for whatever reason they choose to use it. All I ask is that each person do their own research on this subject and make an educated decision. You're life or the lives of your family may someday hang on this very choice.

My SG's will deliver 00 buck in every defensive engagement.

There is also a ton of good penetration information on this site as well.

thx slowz i agree i do mix my loads with 2 #8's in the front and the slug buck combo for the rest just for the reason that i have two small kids and ones room is in the middle though i do not oil hinges just as a safety feature plus i have a teenage daughter and it works great but the little guy does still get up every now and then come on people lets get posting

In this situation I have to agree that buckshot is th way to go to make sure that the attacker is going down. I want my girlfriend to put them down with one shot and not have to take two or 3 shots.

It's all a compromise. You just gotta look at your particular situation and weigh the different alternatives. Knockdown vs overpenetration.

I happen to live in a townhouse and share a wall with a family of five. My line of sight from bedroom to the top of the staircase is also directly in line with my neighbor's bedroom. She's 7years old. Over penetration is a HUGE concern for me. My choice:
            1)Less-Lethal beanbag
            2) #6 squirrel shot
            3&4)#4Buck
            5)#1Buck.
            Buttstock Carrier adds 4 #4
            Sidesaddle adds 6 00

My idea being an escalation of force as necessary. Hopefully I would never need the heavy stuff (or any of it for that matter).

              problem solved....Kel-Tec KSG.....

you can switch from one mag tube to the other....flip a switch

              14+1....:D

IMHO.....#4 buck works well for most applications.....(22cal balls IIRC).....they will stop an intruder....and heavy enough you can still bounce them off the asphalt under a car to remove the ankles of some bad guy taking cover behind it....but looses a lot in walls.

#00 is generally going to be the best for take down....but #4 is kinda the best of both worlds....a happy medium you could say.

                  Very cool concept.

They were intially reported to have an "issue" http://gunnuts.net/2011/01/20/kel-te...shotgun-video/ .... lets hope it's been resolved. I like it.

Through first hand experience, it's more like about 8 feet unless they are bouncing off of a wall.

depends which direction they were heading, coming at you or stumbling backwards saying "oh sh*t" or "أوه القرف "
