  • 100 yard weapon

I already have a " Reach out and touch someone weapon but am looking at a 30-30 lever action for a 100 yard and less weapon, any suggestions?

I have been looking for one as well. I have visited several pawn shops in my area and have found a few, but they wanted more than a new price for it. I have also been looking in the local papers. It is almost deer season so they will go fast. Check gunbroker.com for one. They have them all the time- maybe you can get lucky and not have to pay to much. Our local Wal-mart has them for $367 right now. That is what most of the used ones are going for as well. Good luck and hope this helped.

I expect I'll just have to stick with the .308 and adjust for the necessary elevation ....

I have killed countless mule deer with a Winchester model 94 30-30. They sell for up to $500 for one in very good condition. I highly reccomend it. They are light and fast and easy to carry in one hand. I just recently bought a Henry lever action .22. If their 30-30 is similiar it would also be a good gun. 30-30 is probably one of the most common calibers out there. If you like to shoot with iron sights and don't want a semiauto this is the way to go.

P.S. It is good to have a gun for every ocassion if you can afford it and afford to stock up on ammo. You also need time to practice and get good with all your guns. They are also a good way to stock up on trade goods if you need to acquire other items and don't have the $ at the time.

One other thing to consider with the 30-30, you can optimize the 30-30 rifle by utilizing Hornady's Leverevolution (Yes one word) ammunition. It offers flater trajectories, translating into greater accuracy down range. Good luck with your decision.

As I was just looking at it the other day, I only see 2 problems with the Marlin 338. 1) The ammo is pretty damn expense, and 2) in a PSHTF situation, it's gonna be impossible to find ammo for. But, if you can afford the rounds and stock up on em...

I have 2 guns that got for a reasonable price i use for short to mid range. The first is a Winchester 300 win mag (some miltary snipers are using the 300 now due to the power and trajectory). The other is a Mossberg 30-06 atr shoots good to about 150 yds. I am still looking for a good ammo to get past the 150 yd. mark and have good groups.

You're right about the 338 cartridge. Actually I meant the 336 model, in 30/30! The 338 is sweet tho.

I wish you lived close to me I have a Winchester 30-30 AE Lever action I'd like find a new home. I've never shot the gun myself,I let my son use it once to deer hunt with , he fired it once , killed the buck and it's been sitting in the safe ever since, my Ex bought it for me about 15 years ago without asking me first and I've just never cared for a lever action, they look good hanging over a fireplace , but I prefer a semi auto, or bolt action.

Not to change the subject, but for short range have you thought about a good pistol caliber carbine? I have a Hi-point 9mm carbine that works extremely well at the range that you are talking about!!

Thanks for the input. I havn't shot the gun since i have had it, shot it when he had it though. I said i got it for a good price and the price was free. A friend of mine's husband had the gun and somehow cracked the stock, and didn't want to order a new one so gave it to me, i ordered a stock from mossberg and i am suppose to recieve it today. When i brought the gun home i began to examine it. I have never seen a barrel so filthy in my life. It took me forever to that gun completely apart and clean everything. I use to have a few 30-06 and really like the caliber. So i didn't hesitate on ordering a stock so i could try out. What reasonably priced ammo do you recommend for it?? And thanks for imput.
