  • Putting the AK and FAL through the paces

Will be going out to the range today. I will put the AK and the FAL through the paces and will report back. No reloads on this trip. Factory ammo only. I do not expect much from them with this ammo.

It has been both a productive and a non-productive day. The AK did very well. I shot at 50 yards, 100 and 200 yards. The AK did well at all distances with russian mil-surp stuff. The FAl had a problem. 2nd round, and tore the head off a round and now have a case stuck in the chamber. I cannot find my 308 broken shell extractor since I moved. I will have to order another one. Crud! I should have known better then shoot factory R-P ammo.

I also ran the M-1 Carbine through the 50 and 100 yard paces. It also performed as well as can e expected for shooting a pistol round through a short carbine.

I commiserate with Your problem vis-a-vis the FAL. When I was NCOIC of a level 4 small arms repair facility we got this alot, even though it is a level 1 repair!
As 'they' used to say; 99% of weapon failures is due to weak cases, dirt/corrosion. Broken cases in the FAL may be the result of a mis-adjusted gas system driving the breechblock slide rearward with too much force or a combination of all the above.
Thanks for reminding us of the need for a broken case extractor! I will now buy a second extractor, just in case!

Yeah. I need to adjust the gas nut. I be darned if I cannot find my broken shell extractor. I will order one, and in the mean time I will use the old wooden dowel trick.

Ok. Got the broken shell out. Very odd. This has happened a couple of times with other rifles, but this is the first time I have ever seen only 1/4 of the case left in the chamber. Usually it is 90%. It is out, the rifle will be very thouroughly cleaned, and greased down. Will see what happens next time.
