  • M-14 - What's the current price-point?

I'm considering the purchase of an M-14. Can anybody give me a ball park of what I'm looking at spending for a used (good condition) example?

Also, any direction for reputable dealers would be appreciated as well.

    Many thanks.

Are you looking for a true M-14 or an M-1A? M-1A run's around $1500 to $2500. An true M-14 will run you easy 10 grand if you can find one. As far as used...last i heard M-1A's are running kinda low on stock so used is not going to be priced much under retail.

Okay, maybe I'm NOT looking for an M-14 :(
And no, I wasn't seeking a true M-14 (full auto). I like the calibre but not at that price.

I'm looking for a good semi-auto riffle (in that calibre) that I can afford. I figured I'd start there.
I don't like the AK variants. So, I'm not really sure what that leaves me. I'm not well versed in long riffle varieties.

Have you looked into AR-15's? If you wanted something in the .308 range you could go for an AR-10, or just build an AR-15 in .50 Beowulf. Any one of those would be cheaper than the M-1A route.

The .50 Beo will not be any cheaper, after you account ammo cost. The .50 Beo is very nice and I have an overwatch upper, but it would suck to have PSHTF. You will never be able to find ammo for it and if he is on a budget, I don't think he wants something that costs $2 to $4 a round to shoot. Same does with the 6.5 & 6.8. An a DPMS LR308 with a 16" hbar could be a nice option for less than $1,000.

Seems to me, a Mini-14 or AR-15 with a 5.56 upper is what he was propably asking about, but not sure.

Yea PSHTF anything thats not very common would most likely be something thats only be good for trade. You wont have much free time to sit around and reload ammo all day so stick with the most common cartridge's for any PSHTF weapon. I wouldnt even want a .223 AR, all of mine are 5.56.

I just got back from a gun show in Vegas and M1A's are goin for around $1700. Doesn't seem to matter if they're new or used. A good AR in .308 is running around a grand. I think the M1A is an awesome rifle, no doubt, but I don't know if it's $600 better than say a DPMS LR308 AP4. Or hell, you can get a DPMS SASS for what the M1A will run ya.

You're on the right track. An M14 type battle rifle is a tried, and tested platform.
That said, a FAL clone would be worth looking into also.
Good luck, and keep us posted.

FAL Clone... anybody recommend a dealer or location? And how much do you think I'd end up spending?

Also, stepping down in size, anybody familiar with a Keltec SU-16D ? The price (new) seems to be in my range, and I like the fact it takes AR15 mags. Thoughts?

Having had experince with both the M1A and the SU-16D, both are fine rifles. The difference being the .308 packs more punch and the M1As are expensive. The SU-16D handles well, feeds most ammo with ease and is about a third of the price of an M1A. If budget were not a concern, I'd go M1A hands down. However, the Kel-Tec is a great alternative. The main thing is practice, practice, practice. I'd be more wary of a marksman with a .22 than a neophyte with an M14.

OK frist off i would say save the money for a little longer and get the m1a the range is great and is very dependable. and the 5.56 and the .223 are the same round dwebb86. I hope that you haven't settled yet I know this is kind of an old post so .

have you looked into a PTR-91 or if you can find one a Springfield SAR-8? You can get these for a little less money than an M1A... but (there's always a but isn't there?) this particular rifle design chews the snot out of brass...I've had some actually bend hitting the window frame of the shoot shack... and witht he delayed roller blow back operation it kicks like a government mule! I get bruised every time I shoot either of these... I really like the M1A much better but the PTR and the SAR will spit the bullets down range accurately and reliably. If you're in the NH area let me know and I will meet you at the range if you'd like and you can try one of each

M1a Cann't go wrong with an full size battle rifle. Improvement on the tested Garand. Open action lets dirt in also lets dirt out. Priced at the upper end of the class but worth it in reliability. There are also some good upgrades out there. I suggest you get an extra triggergroup and bolt. I also put a Smith's ent. muzzlebreak on mine. As to the 50Beo yes the ammo is pricey. Plan ahead. I have gradually stockpiled 1000 rounds and components to load that many more. There will be enough downtime to reload in any long term situation. I also have oredered a Guncrafter md2.
The same bullits can be used to reload in both. I also have an extra upper in 5.56, a 22lrauto, 357 carbine, 30-06, 300wm to round out the rifles.

We live in the golden age of firearms diversity. There are so many good choices available you just have to decide what your personal needs/desires are.

                            Cheers,

                            ts

The problem is whether you will be able to collect the brass after shooting it.
My weapon can kill, it isn't limited to mere assault
