  • Mosin Nagant 91/59 carbine

I found one of these advertised for $175. and wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this weapon .I've done some online research myself, but was kinda wanting to hear from someone that had some hands on experience with
them.Mainly I am interested for the history behind them, but not opposed to using it too, just not as my main weapon. I've only seen pictures at this point but it appears to be in very good condition.

I've had several of these and they are excellent shooters and it is a powerful caliber. They are used in some to the northern states to hunt moose with, it that tells you anything.
The Mosin Nagant was a mainstay of many third world countries during world wars one and two and throughout the cold war. They can still be found in service today in some undeveloped countries. It was often used as a sniper rifle which speaks for it's accuracy. The price seems a little high to me. The most I have ever spent on one is $110, that being some years back. I would think that even today you should be able to pick one up well under a $150. Shop around before you jump on this one, you may do much better.

I have never fired one. I am considering purchasing one however. Big 5 sporting goods just ran a thanks giving sale on these guns for $89.00. Hard to beat that price. Check it out.

          Moisin-Nagant

I've had three, one of which had a Sako action and was incredibly accurate. I really like them and plan to purchase another.

I have had a model 44 for a few years and love it. About a month and a half months ago I bought the Model 38 carbine. It is over a FOOT shorter than the rifle I currently own and is still accurate for quite a distance, though not nearly as far as the model 44.

I am going to sell the rifle to a buddy and keep the carbine for myself.

Oh I paid 150 for the carbine and 120 for the rifle.

              Various Mosin Rifles

The Mosin Nagant rifle is chambered in 7.62x54R (R is for Rimmed). Sometimes you will see it listed as 7.62x53, and these will be the same.

Ammunition for these will vary, but surplus ammunition is still sold in spam cans, but is corrosive. Look for the light ball, as some was made for machine guns and will have quite a bit more kick and flame ball to them. You can find some tracers, or light and heavy rounds. Wolf and a few others like S&B do make some Non-corrosive rounds but at a greater cost.

The Model he asked about is the M91/59 and one of the less common ones. $150 for it is not a bad price depending on condition. Try to look for markings, if you see the arrow in the triangle, it is a TULA and normally better made, and more accurate. Also look to see if the muzzle had been counter bored, this would show that there was either damage repaired, or the barrel could be shot out. (The last couple inches of the barrel will be drilled out to remove any problems.) Even these can still be accurate.

The M91/59 does not have a fixed bayonet attached to the end of the rifle. The M91/30 is the longest and most common Mosin, and can be had for $69 or so for the cheaper more common arsenal refinished models. There is also an M38 and M44. Shorter barrels again, and one with a folding bayonet, the other removable.

They are good accurate rifles, if you search youtube there are multiple 1 mile shots as well as many other stories on the web about them. The cartridge is similar to the the 308/30-06 and used by countless people in many wars. They are very reliable, dependable, and cheap. Nothing like being able to buy 10 of them for less than one AR15, and a spam can (440 rounds) of ammo used to be $40-50 before the presidential election, now double in cost, but still reasonable compared to the price of other ammo.

For $100 you can pick up a nice rifle and some ammo at a gun show. If you are looking for a cheap trunk gun that has some good kick, give one a try!

$175? You can spend more than that on ammo in an afternoon.

I have a short barreled version... the first time at at the BOL over the pond (133yards) everybody hit the 10 inch plates at least 90% of the time with 174 grain. when we switched to 203 grain it dropped at least t1.5 feet at that range. i'd have to conduct more shooting tests, but i've already added a long barreled version to the "list".
