I've been watching this new History Channel series for a few weeks, lots of neat stuff!
In my opinion the best bits are the high speed photography of weapons firing.
this week Ermy compared the AK-47 and the M-16. What caught my attention was during the 'slow motion' scenes of the two rifles fireing I could see the barrel of the AK whipping about like a fly rod when the bolt chambered each round due the mass of the bolt combined with the operating rod/gas piston slaming into the breech of the weapon. Because the M-16 has no rod or piston the barrel remained far more ridgid during fireing. This makes the M-16 a much more accurate rifle in rapid fire modes. I am now watching as other weapons are fired for that same barrel whip some guns, even bolt actions, exhibit larger amounts of whip than the M-16. This makes me think that those rubber doughnuts and fluted barrels might actually have an inpact on group size!
