Bulgarian AKS/Arsenal Inc SLR 95 with milled receiver and hammer forged Styer barrel. No longer imported but can be found.

Arsenal Inc: Older models and milled receiver variants are great. Note: Some newer models are reworked Siagas (SGL series only).

Molot VEPR II: Caution heavier than average AKS-47s. No longer imported but can be found.

Saigas: Made by Izmash (Original AK-47 manufacturer) Made in .223, 7.62 x 39 and .308 Winchester.

    Norinco MAC-90 or Polytech

    Avoid:

WASRs: Poor Quality, Fit and Finish, hit or miss bargain basement variant. Common Pawn Shop AKS.

    Yugos: Not Chrome Lined/Chambered

Certain Maddis are as bad as the WASRs

Avoid anything with Century, Hesse, Vulcan stamped on it. (Bad Ju Ju!)

I'm a big fan of the Norinco Mac 90 variant....the thumbhole stock takes some getting used to, but becomes very second-nature, and Norinco has gained a pretty healthy reputation.....plus the Mac looks great.....

My Mac-90 got promoted to SHTF/PAW "Safe-Queen" status along with my SLR-95 and others after sighting it in. I removed the wooden thumbhole stock and foregrip and replace it with ATI's Dragonov Stock combo. Some of the wooden stocks have been known to crack. I replaced the trigger group with a U.S. built FCG for compliance purposes as well.

The blued finish of the MAC-90 requires a little more vilgilance than say a painted AKS when expose to the elements, but not a big deal. The vented gas piston tube helps with cooling and keeps the firearm cleaner but can be visible during night firing. It also has no provisions for the installation of a muzzle break or flash suppressor. I'll probably see about installing a slip or pin on flash suppressor. Fit and Finish is exceptional. It ate everything I fed it without any hiccups. Accuracy was very respectable for an AKS. My Brother purchased one the same time I did, and his has over 10,000rds through it. It's a little worse for wear since he does not take care of his firearms but it still runs just fine. No issues with his over the long term. I took a little 0000 steel wool with some gun oil to his MAC and it looked really good once I got done with it. I strongly recommend a MAC-90 as an AKS purchase consideration.

The ridiculous thumbhole stock politicians [Diane Feinstein] demanded to be put on MAC-90's, remind me of a beautiful girl forced to wear an ugly dress. She's still beautiful, you just have to get that ugly thing off her. The Draganuv stock is much better.
