For many the SKS just makes sense!

The SKS strengths lend it to the backwoodsman/outdoorsman for several reasons: simplicity of maintenance, incredible reliability, accuracy that matches the range limitations of the cartridge, and the semi-auto action combined with stripper clips more readily meet threats than lever and bolt action rifles. I personally shy away from optics with this platform because of its relatively short range, and there are peep sight options if the stock sights are undesirable.

I've been relying on a No.4 Enfield for similar reasons, but even reloading this cartridge isn't cheaper than buying surplus ammo for the SKS. And the big cartidges add up in weight REALLY fast!

Ive got 2 rifles 1 norinco 1 yugo my norinco is very nice made in 1967 but never shot before I bought it . at 100 yards I can put a nice group together . my yugo is ratty looking but I love the grenade launcher and sights on it .I found a great video on youtube that taught me how to take it apart and put it back together.I would love to own a ar15 but its not in my budget. I call the sks the poor mans assault rifle. If anyone has any questions lets put them out there Im always looking to learn more about my sks's.

I totallly agree! Mine have been converted to a detachable mags, but I think the stripper clip is actually faster........been thinking about changing them back.

I have several SKS rifles they were just such great buys I had to acquire them. The Russian,Yogo and Romanian made ones are better quality. The Chinese are at the bottom of my list because quality varies. I have seen several that doubled or went full auto because of weak trigger group springs or parts.

Spare parts for the SKS used to be cheap but are harder to find and a lot more expensive now. The rear cover scope mounts and the cheap short Chinese scopes that work well on the SKS are still around for very cheap closeout prices. I bought a box of 10 of the rear cover scope mounts at a recent gunshow for $60 from a guy that wanted to dump them. They did need a little fitting to work on all my rifles so I etched the serial # inside the housing to keep them with the rifle they were fitted to.

I like the SKS rifles that were sold that took the standard AK mags but we aren't allowed that model here in CA. I have never had anything but problems with the crappy aftermarket detachable mags. The Chinese 20 rd fixed mags also have not been reliable enough for me to want to use them regularly. The orginal 10rd mag and stripper clips are the best most reliable way to go.

I bought several of those red plastic SKS stocks for $10 ea that were available a few years ago and put them on a couple of my favorite SKS rifles. They have survived a lot of time on the ATV and pickup and take a beating better than the original wood stocks.

The SKS is a great survival rifle. Simple, rugged, and reliable. I've had mine for a quarter of a century. If it was loaded it has fired every time I pulled the trigger. It is not a tack driver, I have plenty of rifles that are, but I still love my SKS.

I've had one for 11 years. It's a Norinco, open sites and no added accessories and I can shoot all day long at a 10 inch wide paper plate out at 300 yards and every bullet will be in it. I have put it in my gun vise at the range and got that down to a spread less than 5 inches, so it's old eyes that need the big white paper plate I guess. I have passed on alot of offers to sell it.
