There is a certainly a lack of talk about the .22LR here so far. Sure it's just a .22LR but in a SHTF scenario it could be the most handy firearm you have. .22LR are fairly simple to use, good to train with, cheap and the ammo & weapon is incredibly light. You can carry 1,000 rounds in the back pockets of your jeans. I know you won't be stoked about the .22LR because it isn't the sledgehammer .308/7.62 or the super fast .223/5.56, but do you want to use all your defense/offense ammunition to shoot rabbits/squeeks/turkey or whatever else could be part of your diet if you end up bugging out into the hills and hankering for a bit of animal flesh? A .22LR with a cheap scope will bag you plenty of game unless you only want deer/elk/bear/cougar whatever meat, as well as deter the less aggressive aggressors.

that's correct, that's the one, great concept easy to stash in a backpack, nobody would ever know, also great way to carry a backup

        I humbly agree and disagree

The AR-7 is ok, but pricey. Plus it is an automatic. I own an Bauer Firearms takedown that I bought for $50.00 new. It is a .22 over and a .410 under. It needs no lube, and taken down is only about 18 inches long. It offers the .410 as an additional bonus. The .410 will also shoot the .45 Long Colt round. It kicks like hell, but in a survival situation it matters not. I have uploaded some photos of it into my photo logs. Take a look and tell me what you think.

Long story short, I used to live near an Indian reservation. One of the local tribemen needed money for booze and smokes, and had this new in the box. I offered him $50.00 and he jumped on it. It has a VERY low serial number too. 3 digits, and low 3 digits too. I think they are out of business. This was when I was 19 years old, so it was long ago.

The piece played a vital role in my survival as a college student. Nothing like pheasant and rabbit shot out of season, illegally with a .22 in the local park cooked in a college dorm crock pot stewed in the college man's favorite liquid...Pabst Blue Ribbon or Rainer Beer, a few packets of borrowed salt and pepper from the local Burger King, and a few soda cracker for a thickening agent.

I was helping a buddy at the local gun show and an old range rancher came in trying to sell one just like mine. He wanted $100.00 for it. I am kicking myself that I did not grab it now.

I like the M6 Scout for a compact backup weapon in the .22 and .410 angle'

For a survival weapon it is hard to beat a Ruger 10/22 and few thousand rounds.

I do prefer something more substantial when my arse is on the line but hard to beat the utility for all around use of the .22 :)
                73

                later,
                ZA

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to
beat you to death with it because it is empty.

The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get.

I will be taking posession of my new 10-22 in a couple of weeks. I will, as usual, be posting some photos. My wife does not know that I know she bought me one for my Birthday gift. I am already buying stuff for it.

I have a Marlin model 60 my grandfather gave me (first rifle actually). It is prolly my favorite to shoot and plink around with. 22LR may not be the best defense round but it like the shotgun has a place in any SHTF situation.

Any decent 22LR is a great asset in any survival situation! I had a 22LR single shot that originaly cost about $3.50 new, it was a short kid's rifle with a Dockendorf rear sight, (must have been an extra cost item)! That old single shot taught me how to make every shot count, how to stalk to the correct place to shoot from, how to think like a hunter and the prey. I have a fantasy that a world exists where every child, certainly every boy, would be raised in a world where there was enough open land where they could learn the basic skills of life, the S.S. 22LR being a big part of that!
