Mick is right on target. Shotguns are by far not the end all tool like the majority of the population think. Do some research. Here is a good post on fighting with shotguns. This website also has a lot of other good information. Enjoy fella's

I'm an 870 fan myself...never had one fail me. I have 4 of them, still need 2 18-20"bbls to finish them out though. I have one 26" folder with a shell holder stock, one 18" w/ Pacmayer pistol grip with side shell holder, one 26" with a 6 pos stock, and one 20" with a factory synthetic stock w/pistol grip.
I just ordered 4 scabbords with slings that can also be pack mounted via molle straps. If I head out...I'd like to have an 870 on my back, pistol on my hip, and a rifle in my hand.

I saw those scabbards at $20 they look like a steal, I almost bought one but I already have 4!

Shotgun is the home defense for most people and here is why:

            1. Initial cost is less then 350.00 for the gun and ammo.

            2. Will not shot through a home wall with most loads.

            3. With a short barrel and cut down stock you can clear a room without putting that big long barrel out where someone can grab it away from you.

            4. Area to train most pistol ranges and your friends farm are great places to learn how ot shot it. With a .223 you need a real range that can handle rifle fire.

            5. Ammo is available at Wal Mart can you say the same for .308 or.338?

            6. A pump will scare away most people so any one left is a true enemy and needs to be put down.

            7. One shot with a slug or 00 will put down any one just aim for center mass.

            8. Easy to maintain

            9. Did I forget anything. Oh Yes you can hunt rabbits, deer, pigs to birds with a shotgun; what can you put on the dinner table with a M-16?

I have limited experience with a shotgun in various situations, but I am in the shotgun corner. I own one, a Mossberg 500 that I have had for 20+ years and have yet to have a failure. With the 18" barrel, it is fairly small. With a 5yr old I do not want to shoot 5.56, .45 or even 9mm in my house. Now I do have a .357 mag close to the bed to allow me to get to the shotgun. If there is 1 or 2 people in my house and 5 shots from the 500 doesn't do the trick, then I am doing something very wrong. Of course that's just my opinion and if it makes me an idiot, then so be it.

Unless you think that you will be fending off 20 biker zombies, I feel an M4/battle rifle is a bit too much inside of your house. If it comes to that, there should be some type of warning(economic breakdown or something), again, my opinion.

In my opinion, a Benelli M4/M1014 is the best combat shotgun, period. Yes, it is expensive, but how much is your life worth? If one lives in an apartment or a house with people in other rooms the largest, safe, 12ga round to use is 7 1/2 shot. Anything bigger will penetrate doulble sheetrock walls and injure or kill whoever is on the other side. Buying quality only hurts once.

Got the Mossberg mod 500 myself kind of partial to stuff i used in the mil but my favorite shotgun is the NEF pardner in 20GA got it when I was 12 and am surgical with rifled slugs just repetition by now but it is comfortable.

I am a huge fan of the Mossberg 500 series shotguns (of which the 590 is a member). I have had several and still do. They are reliable and not too terribly expensive.

Another alternative: I have never been a fan of anything but a pump...until now. I am very, very impressed with the Mossberg 930 SPX. The disadvantage of a pump is that should one hand/arm become incapacitiated or you need to grab a wife/child and return fire, you cannot. The 930 SPX is a moderately priced, incredibly reliable, 8 round semi. The Blackwater edition is an excellent fighting shotgun which I would feel very comfortable recommending.

Another advantage of the 930 SPX is that it is about half the price of most other combat specific autoloaders.

First of all, shotguns are ideal for home defense....I have 3 little kids and I certainly don't want high powered rifle rounds ripping threw their bedrooms...I like the Belelli Nova, but I would say that the Beretta Extrema with the 6 round extension tube is the ultimate (It holds 12 rounds and is a semi-auto) Look up the video of the guy shooting 12 clay pigeons in 2-3 seconds, amazing....
