I completely disagree with the OP. In my experience with Colt, Bushy, and Rock Rivers are some of, if not the best rifles in the market. For the most part the brand are all about the same in quality. Stag offers a Left handed ejection for the leftys which is nice. A good AR even m4 type can be had for less than 900.

What I know about AR-15 guns wouldn't fill a thimble so I am open to qualified experience here. I have an opportunity to purchase up to four assembled AR-15 clone shorties in .223 for $725 each. Now this is as cheap as I can part one together though I can't say I have ever done so. I have no real affection for the little .223 ammunition but this is a tempting offer and could move my gun preparations dramatically forward.

I need your opinion as I simply lack enough knowledge to know what I am doing here. If you were me, knowing my preparations, would you consider this offer?

Arranging FFL transfers would be done with my local gun dealer? I have never done this before, what is required?

The guns are unfired with Galati International A-2 carry handle uppers with ER Shaw heavy 16" barrels, Essential Arms lower with six position collapsible stocks. Includes sling and a 30-rd magazine each.

Now I am a big guy, 6'5" at 323lbs. I love long arms but have never used something this small, almost a carbine. This works for many people I realize but am I kidding myself I won't be annoyed by the small frame size?

Whatever you wish to share with me would be helpful.

I didn't mean to get in a pissing match either. I thinks theres tons of quality at a much lower price and just wanted to pass it on. As for qouting ar15.com just wanted to post it to help some folks with questions. Theres ton of good info there.

Final note: None of them, especially the AR-15 "platform" will operate with a darn if not properly cleaned and serviced on a regular basis.

Except maybe a Kalishnikov. I own 3 and I would stake my life on their funtionality even when filled with sand and mud. The calibre is a drawback though. Even with my good reloads.

I am going to toss some petrol on the fire. I cannot understand the facination with the Stoner design. (AR) I have only owned 3 firearms in my life that I have gotten rid of. The first was a Jennings J-22. No need to explain why on that one. The second was a Mini-14. For fear of offending anyone, I will not comment on the Mini-14. My AR was an Olympic Arms. I was less then impressed with it, and when I factored in the price, I considered it a mid 80's Jaguar. Nice status symbol, but functionally it left a lot to be desired. After about $300.00 in smithy fees and 4 trips, I sold it as is. Maybe I had a lemon.

For what its worth, I too disagree. I would place Bushmaster right under the Colt. I have no problem staking my life on the one I own. Again, personal opinion, and I keep my right beside the other thing that everyone else has.:)

could you rank the major lowers in order of top quality to bottom quality

i like to see everyone's opinions, alot of people say it does matter, alot of people say half of them are made in the same place and just stamped different.

My apologies, as I did not mean to offend. One thing I have learned over the years is the quickest ways to offend are to discuss relgion with friends, sex with your family members, politics in a Vegan chat room, and "the best firearm" with a fellow gun guy.

Just ahooting of my mouth again. Although we probably can both agree that getting rid of the Jennings J-22 was a good decision. Some day I will relate exactly the "incident" that occurred that made me take a torch to it.

Here is the story. I used to live in Houston Texas and had a job with a company that provided big mean guys to go into dope infested apartment complexes in the Greenspoint area and run the dope heads off. One evening some gang bangers towed a stolen car into my upper middle class neighborhead and stripped it down next door at a house that was for sale and vacant. The man accross the street spent WAY too much time in Viet Nam and would "patrol" his suburban home all night with his rifle. Nice guy, but he was way to paranoid, even for me. He came out and caught Rollo and the Rockheads stripping the car out and they had a gun battle with said turds while my wife and I were under the bed clasping our firearms.

I was a tad on alert after this event especially when I found out the ganbangers lived at a property I was currently working.

2 nights later, at 0230 some butt head was pounding at my front door. I reached over and grabbed the J-22 (not sure why, my S&W 686 was sitting right there) and proceeded to walk down the hallway to the front door. Before I got there I, again in a moment of sleepiness pointed the firearm at the door and racked a round. It went off and punched a hole just to the right and below the peep hole. I opened the door to find a buddy of mine on the ground. Crap!!! I thought I shot him. Fortunatly he hit the dirt when the round went off, and fortunatly the round actually hit a solid part of the door and did not exit. He had a flat tire and needed to borrow my garage to fix it.

That night, we looked at the Jennings. The firing pin stuck in the carrier. We removed the slide and cut it with a torch, and went to Greens Bayou and tossed the frame on one side of the bridge and the torch cut slide on the other side.

I should have left it on the porch of one of the gangbangers where I was working with a loaded magazine of stingers.
