Fewer people knew about or owned these in 1994. A side effect of the ban is that they became more desirable because the government didn't want you to have them, to the point where so many people have and shoot these arms that a ban is politically very difficult right now.
On the other hand, the obama adminstration has the ability to restrict imports of guns and ammo and make life difficult without passing laws.
The fact that they have not yet done so makes me wonder whether they truly want to press the issue. There are a lot more expedient ways to get guns off the street. It makes me think they care more about scoring political points by pressing for a ban they can't get done than about the actual issue of gun control.
I truly with they would bring an assualt weapons ban up for a vote so that those in favor had to go on the record supporting it and could get thrown out of office next election cycle.
