I have a Chinese SKS and know very little about it. What are some of the weak points of this weapon that I should look to improve? I have never fired this weapon, it belonged to My Father in-law, and now my wife. (Yep...my wife has an SKS!

The only "weak" point I feel is with high capacity magazines for it. They can be a bit touchy, and wont feed right. You need to try different brands until you find one the feeds flawlessly. If you just keep the factory mag in place, you really dont have all that much to worry about. They break down very easily, and are very dependable. You may want to pick up a broken shell extractor and some replacement springs, but other than that, take it out and shoot!

I had a Norinco years ago, don't expect a great deal of accuracy with Chinese ammo. It just won't group well. I bought some Winchester ammo and was greatly impressed with the accuracy of the rifle. Once you dial it in with good ammo, it's a really good rifle. Make sure you get all the grease out of the action and gas tube before shooting. Mine was packed full. They won't win a beauty contest, but they don't let you down either.

Decent Russian design. Ugly. Made to work when you pull the trigger. Like everything that shoots this round, they are not super accurate, but I like the round myself. Made to be repaired by chinese farmers, so easily field stripped.

When the Norinco's first came into the USA some were (apparently) poorly assembled in regards to the trigger/sear engagement and would 'trip fire' under recoil. So I would recomend that if this happens to you to get a friendly welder to put a new blob of metal on the offending piece and carefully file it down to fit properly.

Lucky me. I am a friendly welder.

I was unaware that Norincos had that problem, but I am very aware of the east euros double tapping if small primered ammo it used. It is the reason I do not recommend using Remington or Winchester in AK's or SKS's. Neither use .310 slugs they use .308, R-P uses small primers, and these rifles were designed to shoot the steel junk. What you can do is buy the American stuff, pull the projectiles and put in Hornady 123 FMJ's that are .310.

I got an SKS (yugo) a couple of months ago, and have added a Tapco stock , rear peep sight from Tech-sights and 20 rd mags from Tapco.
The Tapco mags have functioned perfectly. (as they do for everyone else i know). I have a Krinkov muzzle brake that will go on when i get that pesky grenade launcher off:)
I recommend http://surplusrifle.com for disassembly and other info.

If ya dont mind me asking what ya pick that up for? Just the other day I was talking to a buddy about his sks's. I always thought they looked like junk so I never gave much if any effort into owning one. He really likes his.

I have 3 of them. I have never had a single problem out of any of them despite 1000s of rounds through them. I like the way they shoot, the availability of upgrades and ammo, and they don't break the bank to buy one like an AK or AR-15. Here is a link to one i bought 2 weeks ago for $400 plus a 1000 rounds of ammo.

A coworker traded me the SKS+cash for an AK i didnt need.
As for price, check Shotgun News...i am partial to the Yugoslavian. (22" barrel)
I didnt care much for SKS's until i shot one that had a "Dragunov" style stock
and a rear peep sight. It shot waaaay more accurate than the AK's i tried.
