  • A "Real List" ...or just your list?

Whether you elect to have a secure location to out last a crisis event or would rather be mobile...one needs supplies and gear for either. I would imagine since you are on this site you have started stashing away some stuff....

Just what is it you have stashed anyway? Things you “think” you would need. Or have you cruised the internet and other sources for lists to compare to them in order to make your own. Learning from others is much better than learning from yourself.

Some things would be in common regardless of either of the two groups you go with. Others would be more unique to each group. Again...how can you figure out all you would need without consulting others and their lists. Two heads are better than one.....

So have any of you developed an organized “Written List” of everything you would need and the quantities there of? Or not? If not...why not? Without said lists you will be found “lacking” in many areas and overstocked in others during a crisis event and then it is simply to late.

I also was wondering about some here on this site planning on staying where you are.... no problem but does your location get any of it’s power/water/garbage pick up/sewer/gas/road clearing or whatever from a public utility? If so just how will you survive during a real crisis when it is ALL shut off? No water...no toilet. No sewers being pumped... then they back up and disease spreads. No garbage...it is cast outside and disease spreads. No heat? No nothing.... Got a pet? Got pet food stashed?

Have you ever found as I have that most preppers end up imagining that they can... live off the land by picking edible “things”... this dream always takes place in nice weather when one can get to such things. Not when they are under two feet of snow or in frozen ground or not even in season.

Much like preppers who figure on staying where they are and count on flushing their toilets.... but just once so make it count ;-0. What if the “lights go out” when it is minus 5 outside and snowing??? Bad things do not just happen in just the summer right after a good nights sleep and a great lunch ;-)

Can you handle it? Do you have a real list... compared to others? Have you tested and retested your plan and systems? If not you will find yourself lacking I promise you that. None of us wish that on anyone here.

Rancher, your posts are always thought provoking, and usually result in me adding something else to my list to acquire, plan, or review. Thanks. We have a 'real' list, made from much reading and thinking (worrying?) over exactly what our group will require. We have a non-electric water source. Good stores of food, fuel, and supplies for a year. (Working on two.) Those wild edibles you mention are gathered and stored (mostly dried) for later use. Have much ammo and the skills to use them. It's an ongoing preparation effort.

Rancher, I have not penned/printed a list yet. I need to. I am still thinking broader right now... Food/Water/Medical. I am looking for a good first aid kit that I can supplement as I find sales and such, then a field type surgical kit, yep I ain't scared to go there if need be. I am stocking the home with canned food, saving and filling water bottles, have a foodsaver on the way, might get a chest freezer, too.

You bring up good points about the details... like, if you are without power, and on "city" water, as we call it, you might think you are ok, but the utilities might be w/o power too, them big pumps have to run on something, they likely have a genny, but have they tested it lately? run through any emerency scenarios? do they have sufficient fuel to run 100% for an extended period of time?

I have begun gathering literature (most from here) to print and make a notebook. Like the outhouse plans... I may add some camper type waste water treatment chems to my list... might be nice to cut the odor if I have to have an outhouse on my little spot of land. Just some random thoughts...

rancher, good post. No, I have not written down my list, I misplace things and don't want someone else to find it. Have all my preps in certain locations and know what is in there. As for living off the land, that just to extend what I have. I have several locations which to move to and all locations have water, fuel, and food available. You did mention something which I have not heard people talk about, PETS. Food for our pets is not a problem, or our livestock either. Veterinarians, (spelling?) who knows a vet that is thinking in the same terms as we are? Expecially medicine for our pets, vaccines, etc. I have done some doctorin on livestock and pets, but not to any great lengths. Anyone have any suggestions? I feel that rabies will be a big issue for a while any ways.

I have a list of what I have and a list of what I must get and the last list of what I would like to have:D. I alway look at it this way. Do I have everything I need or want? No and probably wont but I do have what I need for me and my family to make it. I grew up in a family that logged, farmed, hunted trapped and guided so I think living with out services would not be a stretch as I did as a child. I am like every one else on here I think, always knowing you could do more and always trying to do more as time an money let you. For us we try to live in away that mimics early settlers, shelter, fire, water sources, land and livestock ( because I can't get MRE's and canned tuna to reproduce ) This way when it all goes south we have non powered and non supplied backups already in place.

I have those lists, as well. Whenever I see Skyowl digging in my purse, I just say, "It's in the notebook!". I know what he's looking for. He also has a list of his "supplies". Believe he's at the point of good-to-go.

I'll sure be glad when he gets home, I miss him.

Good list rancher. Couple things I had forgotten about. One thing I employ on occasion when I am 'roughing it' alone depending on the location are ipod sized 120 db personal alarms attached to trip wires that surround my sleeping quarters. I am a very light sleeper, but I found that with these rather inexpensive battery operated alarms I am able to rest better knowing that if someone or something approaches my position while I rest, I will know about it. One can be purchased for about $14.00 and I employ 3 or 4. When not in use for that, I have my daughter keep one on her person while in questionable locations. One pull of the pin and I know she feels she is in danger. Just something others out there may have not thought about.

I have my list of : needs, good to have, and dream stuff.
I do not yet have everything I have down...I eat what I stockpile and stock what I eat when it comes to food, so it's always changing and I haven't yet found a system I am comfortable with to track that. I do find that if I go down and organize my preps every month or two, I keep familiar with it.

Thanks for the info HileTroy... glad to see another well prepped. Can you post the source of your perimeter alarm? I prefer to look at tested equipment with a passing grade if I can. We also have been tossing around the idea of trip wires across opening we have created while blocking other approaches with thick dry limbs etc. Natural looking, very noisey to get through. These trip wires could be rigged with your type device in day light and an IR device at night. The security positions could then see the IR light go off and pass the word.... the IR light would be mount high and on the far side of the trip wire in hopes that if the "deer" did have NVGs it would not notice the IR coming on. Therefore the "deer" would have no idea it had been discovered and was soon to be in some real real hot water... with seasoning of course ;-)

I have a general list of what I have, and what I need. That helps me mark out what I've purchased, and the amount, so I don't overpurchase, and helps me see the "big picture". That way, I can see where there are serious gaps that need to be filled. I would love to find a website that has a printable spreadsheet with items listed, so I can make a better way to keep track of everything. If anyone knows where I can find one, please let me know! We are planning on bugging in, but have several places we can go should we need to. I would still like to find a better, more permanent location though.

Here's a site for a portable alarm system that's good out to 1000 feet. Comes with 2 sensors and one receiver. Battery powered. $250.

This is the system I use at home. Our house is so tight that we often do not hear the UPS truck drive up so we put a sensor on our driveway to allert us to anyone coming to our home. It's been working for 5 years now. And it's expandable to 8 sensors. We've got a couple set out to let us know when the coyotes are coming in. Down side is the receiver needs 120vac. $69.
