No, but I got my CB....does that count? *10-4 yasumbitchpileamunkeynut!* - Dr. Evil in Austin Powers 2"I Have Sworn Upon the Altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man." -Thomas Jefferson

The Yaesu FT-897D is a self-contained all mode HF/6m/2m/70cm XCVR offering 100W of power (battery operation: 20W). The radio has an LCD display and features band scope display, DSP, CTCSS tone encode/decode, CW keyer, IF noise blanker, IF shift, 200 memories, multiple scan modes, transverter mode with, .5 PPM TCXO, VOX, and more. Two internal Ni-MH batteries can be installed, or a power supply can be installed instead. Supplied with an up/down hand mic, and a fused DC power cord.
Nope Diesel, don't have one but they are a nice radio that gives you full power in the shack, and QRP in the field when you want it at reduced power levels (20W IIRC on HF)
I did own a Yaesu FT-817 for awhile and it was a nice little radio, but only did 5W of power on all bands... Was a little puny for most modes except CW unless band conditions were excellent.
I prefer the ICOM IC-706MKIIG over the Yaesu, but the Yaesu is better suited for portable ops...
Consider the SGC SG-2020 as well... 20 W on all modes, but only does HF :( Still a nice ruggedized rig. No longer made, but can be found:
Oh yeah and for digital operations such as PSK31 you don't hafta lug a laptop and power supply in the field with you check out this stand alone digital mode encoder/decoder:
An easy and portable way to get on the air with PSK-31 ... no computer required!
The NUE-PSK is a small 7" x 4" x 1" standalone, battery-operated digital modem using a graphic display for transmit and receive text data, as well as for showing band spectrum and tuning. Just plug in a standard PS2 keyboard and connect to an SSB-capable transceiver like the FT-817 or the PSK-xx transceivers from Small Wonder Labs, and you'll have an effective digital mode station that goes absolutely anywhere.
Greatest product of 2008 IMHO:cool:73

Am I reading the specs right on this radio? Does it TX/RX CB channels? I see that it does sideband.
If it's not WAY out of the "newbie" realm...then it may be my perfect mobile/base rig. It'd just require a bit more time to save up for it, but I'd likely never out grow it.

Nope it doesn't TX... FCC wouldn't type accept a radio with an ability to TX on CB channels with 100W
There are probably some mods out there that will allow you to do this though;)73

Yaes FT-857D
I have a FT-857D which is basically the same rig . The only differences, it's smaller, for mobile operations and no internal provision for battery. I run mine mobile in my truck along with an Ameritron AL500 500 watt mobile amplifier and a hustler antenna setup. I have been using this setup for about 2 years and it works great.
There is a mars mod that can be made to the 897 or 857 that will allow it to operate general coverage band. But as Zombie Axe stated this would be illegal to operate on the CB band.
