    Amateur Handheld Transceivers

The Yaesu VX-8R HT provides a full 5 watts FM on 50/144/430 MHz plus 1.5 watts on 222 MHz. It supports Bluetooth® hands-free operation with the optional BU-1 and BH-1 or BH-2 accessories. There is also an optional GPS unit and antenna with loads of features. This radio supports APRS 1200/9600 bps data communication (B band only). Like the VX7R, the VX8R is submersible and meets IPX57 specifications (3 feet for minimum of 30 minutes). A powerful 7.4 V 1100 mAh Lithium Ion battery is included. This HT is small, intuitive to operate only 2.36 x 3.74 x 0.92 inches (thinner than VX-7R). It supports simultaneous independent 2-signal dual receive function with both V + V or U + U. It has weather band receive with Weather Alert. A barometric sensor is included. You can even operate Amateur radio while receiving FM broadcasts! The receive coverage is wider than VX-7R, with an independent AM/FM broadcast receiver circuit. The dot matrix LCD display provides Memory tag up to a maximum of 16 characters. You even get a high-resolution Spectrum Analyzer with ±60 channels indication with wave monitoring of received/modulated signal! And DCS and CTCSS encode and decode is standard.

The VX-8R comes with the SMA antenna, FNB-101LI Lithium Ion battery pack, belt clip and NC-86B battery charger. (The NC-86B should only be used for receive, because it is not capable of supplying sufficient current to support transmit).

Having a feeling the manual will look like an encylopedia though and be hard to use

I really like the Kenwood TH-F6A which can receive SW on lsb/usb as well as fm.

That VX-8R looks really nice especially for APRS, I currently use a Kenwood TH-D7A along with a Garmin Gps for tracking while 'foot mobile'.

Yes Diesel, I bet it is very complicated. My Yaesu VX-5R is very complicated but I can usually stumble my way around the menus to get what I want done :) I like Kenwood for their easy menu operation! I have several Kenwood Rigs and the menu is laid out almost the same on every radio :) The simplest rig to programm imho is the Icom 706 mk II G...

Actually Big Saw, those amateur handhelds have a suprising long run time. Of course you can really drain down a battery by transmitting full power for an extended ragchew session, but they are rechargeable and last awhile :)

I'll wait until they clearance them in a few years ;)

They call radios like this "DC to Daylight" cause they RX almost everything and do everything as well

So is this basically a hand held ham radio? Need a license for it? Most of the terminology went right over my head.

I'm afraid I'd need a PHD in BPT ("button pushing technology")...not to mention a new pair of glasses and a spherical brain alignment! These dang 2 meter HT's are confusing enough for me!

                    What Diesel said :)

Take a look @ this thread for info on how to get started. A lot of this stuff will look complicated until you read a great licensing manual (like is mentioned in the thread) and then it will not look so darn complicated :)

To explain it to you will not make any sense until you read the book... then you will know what questions to ask... but more than likely you will have most of them answered :)

Nice do all radio, but way too many functions to remember all of them in a stressed SHTF. Would need cheat sheets for that one. I am use to using my old dependable standy FT-530. That thing is solid as a brick. I have enough radios and hardware I can always set something up for APRS or packet on VHF or UHF.
