Links in a chain

So far after coming to this forum I have to say I'm very impressed with the knowledge I see, the kindness, the skills and the ideas people have. I also like how Diesel thinks ahead by way of his "Starting Over" which is a great way of really looking at the BIG PICTURE.

What I also see are seperate links in a chain that need to come together. I know it's hard by way of the internet to know who you can really trust, but I think an effort should be made to form one big chain. We can do this through the get togethers that are being talked about, but we can also do that by finding one person close to you and getting to know them off-line. If we all could do that we would start to see that chain come together.

You could also call this a buddy system which I'm sure all of us Military guys can relate to. If the SHTF it will be no different then combat. What I mean is it will be all about the "Brother" next to you, nothing else.

If anyone has any ideas let's start putting our heads together. This doesn't mean you have to give up your privacy, plans or ideas, it simply means getting to know someone a little more personally so you have each other to fall back on if need be. I know alot of people have this idea that they can make it on there own, but in reality it will take a strong chain of support and we all know a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. No one says this has to be rushed either, in my book trust and respect are earned, but it has to start somewhere.

Well , I have to head out of town today and won't be back until later tonight so let's do a little thinking and get some imput here. I really think this is important.

I just came across your post. You have to give people a little time to ponder what your asking. Scenarios are fine, but some people do not want to indulge more personal information. You have been so willing to share what you know on this site, and I know I can speak for myself and others when I say "we appreciate it"!!! Dont get discouraged! Let people think about what your saying/asking, and let them decide how they want to take it. :)

I've been thinking about this for a while now. I have tried to respond twice, but just couldn't find the words that I wanted.

I very much like what your saying.... I guess my concern comes down to locations. When the curtain goes up and society and the internet comes crashing down. I'm pretty much going to be useless to anyone more than a few miles from my home... Just as anyone more than a few miles from my home will be useless to me.(I plan to Shelter In Place) Unless you are a member of a pre-existing Mutual Assistance Group, and/or have a joint BOL, you're going to be Bugging in or Bugging out, with whatever neighbors that are left nearby. I have met with a few guys that are in my area from this board, but again, we are miles apart, making shared resources and/or security difficult at best.
I'm also a member of a local group here in the Triad, but it is primarily a "research" group that shares information, and skills. Not really a MAG... Even the members of the local group are spread out far enough to be ineffective after a collapse.
My hope is to "convert" a few of my neighbors that seem more open to this topic, without showing my prepping hand.
I feel that small communities will have to pull together in times of need.

I believe it would be very beneficial to have some established radio contacts with individuals or groups in different areas... Just for information exchange and possible bartering opportunities

Slow's comments are pretty much how I feel too. Too far away from most all of you to be any good. Have been keeping my ears open here to see if there are like-minded people and have found a few. OPSEC is powerful when we are talking about the very survival of our families.

Points well made gentleman. Here in rural Ga. we already have in place a group and a location to train. If need be we can Bug Out to the locale. You have to start local then work your way out to other people and places. Have a core group first.

I totaly agree with what your all saying! If some people were pondering the thread that is good because you were actually thinking before jumping into it and I totaly understand. I'm also in a small community in which we look after each other.

Maybe I should have been a little more clear and I'll attempt to do that now. I guess the best way for me to do that is to use an example. My thoughts are this...if you had somebody fairly close to you (which is so important) who was also a memeber on this forum would you be willing to get together in a public place at first, keeping your privacy intact and start getting to know them, sharing ideas etc...?

Let's say I know someone in Southern Wisconsin who is about 3-4 hours from me. I think it's a good idea to get to know them as much as possible. Then let's say that person in Southern Wisconsin knows someone in Illinois which is closer to them and they get to know them. It's like a chain which can be used to link us to a certain point. By doing this ahead of time I now know some people more then through on-line conversation and in turn feel a little more comfortable about actually helping them if something were to happen. Let's say there was some type of disaster down in their area and they wanted to get out. I would be more then willing to help them without reservation seeing we have gotten to know each other in person from time to time. We have a tight community up here and we would love to help who ever we could, but knowing a person a little better makes this easier. Would we take in a stranger who needed help? Heck ya, but you always have to be careful, let's face it they are strangers.

I hope I have done a better job explaining you guys and I wasn't upset about no responses just a little confused that's all.
