  • Picked up my fourth Xiegu G 90 HF radio...160 through 10 meters.

Have now received my fourth Xiegu G 90 HF radio capable of 160 through 10 meters.

As Is the case with the other three I will be doing the modification which allows one to transmit straight through from 160 meters through 10 meters as is also the case with my other HF type radios.

This is so done for emergencies ...and I don't spend much time on certain bands unless monitoring/receiving.

Ordered with this radio is the cooling fan attachment...and it works well and also quiet.

Two of these radios will be put away in metal ammo cans after modification. They will be spares...

Also will I be putting into the cans a G5RV antenna with each....and coaxial cable.

These radios work surprisingly well at only 20 watts max....and I have used mine often to speak with my friend out in Eastern Tennessee some 400 miles west of me and on 75 meters.

Due to this recent hurricane ...a tree has landed on my property from two lots over and I have recently cut the portion up in my yard. But it also damaged my wire loop antenna and I will be restringing it up into the tops of my trees before I can operate on HF radio frequencies.

:Prior to the Xiegu G 90 radio I was using a Icom 706 MK II g rig and was very satisfied with it...still am..but the G 90 seems to do the job with much less current drain from my power supply.

Have you a generic 'EMP / Storm' resistant enclosure for each, with serious over-voltage protection at connections ?

if nearly everyone does not have such, you'll have commo with nobody anyway. I'd not believe a word I heard on radio, if shtf. No way to know if your buddy has his jewels in a visegrip.

If it's not a massive shtf, I dont think much in the way of prep makes financial sense. If it's low-grade or local, just move on out of it. The most likely thing is faster inflation and only gold or other solid, recognized, widely-desired, portable hard goods are any help with that.

Um, you could set up key words for authentication and to flag coercion, each of your group having a different set to prevent 'roll-overs'...

Believe it or not, a metal trash can with a tight fitting lid will reduce EMP1, EMP2, and EMP3 impulses from a solar flare or other EMP to survivable levels. Adding metal tape around the edges or a foam metal seal makes it almost perfect.

A decent faraday cage is doable for very little money.

            Yes...

I do not believe alot of what I hear on the radio and or television and have a huge shaker of salt by my side.....even when listening to or watching the fabled Fox News...I don't trust Fox News as well as the rest..there are certain topics even Fox News dares not cover.

These ham radios will pick up short wave bands as well....
I have been a shortwave listener long before I got my ham license and shortwave listening ...long before home computers ...taught me how rigged our news media really was against us here in the USA...and I mean both political parties.
I still listen to short wave on my ham radios or on one of the four shortwave receivers I also have ...Tecsun PL 660 receivers which also get AM/FM and certain aircraft bands...SSB too.

My ham radios are also modified to be able to transmit and receive on the CB bands...I understood this for years and years now ...to modify a ham radio to work on the CB bands....

The hams taught me to build my own antennas long before I got my ham ticket...and most of my base station gear is home built.

I also know sufficient not to trust or depend on Cell phones in certain events. They can be made to be cut off .....go dead. You folks decide for yourselves....

I will also not buy a cell phone for which I cannot remove the battery at my discretion. Again...you folks decide four yourselves.

How many people in your group have very fancy cell phones by which you cannot remove the battery without great disassembly.

Do you know what this means ...for your group????

              Herk7769,

Thanks for the tip about the metal tape...I'd not thought of that but it is so simple...elegantly simple. I should have thought of it myself.

I'd bet any Ham radio with a general coverage receiver can be modified to TX anywhere it can RX. :D

My ICOM 7300 can be modified to support RX Frequencies: 0.030-74.800 MHz. My 440S lacks 50 MHz, as a result its range 0.15-30 MHz. OTOH as that is a huge spectrum to locate anyone. IMO, established bands would have a better chance as unmodified rigs are more common than modified ones.
Radios with a spectrum scope can spot activity. The 7300's display can show 5kHz–1000kHz. SDRs have continuous coverage from 1 kHz to 2 GHz and can display 10 MHz.
A bud has one from this manufacturer: https://www.sdrplay.com/which-rsp/ I've seen it and it is impressive; however, I don't know anymore than you if you read the specs. :)

As far EMP protection, how was it tested and how powerful was the pulse are the questions.
The biggest problem, whoever would launch an EMP attack isn't going to warn us.

                This is interesting reading:

Yes..indeed. I have two olde Yaesu FT 890 General Coverage rigs and they have been so modified to transmit straight through...everywhere they can receive.

I have done the same with my Yaesu mobile FT 100 D,...transmit straight through,.

Mind you ...I do not so do...but it is there for emergencies...or SHTF or TEOTWAWKI,.

Same with my Icom 706 rig.

My Kenwood 530 SP added the WARC bands with a snip of a wire and that was it. Today's rigs have a general receiver which made matters a lot easier.
The reason, I bought my 440S/AT was to work splits when the DX station is transmitting on 14.030 and listening 5 kHz or so up.

I'm not too sure I'd be transmitting during SHFT etc; as who knows who might be listening...

As a side light to collapsing economies/...and prepping/survival...

My long range wire antenna collapsed on one side and it took some manipulation to shoot another support line back up into the tree to get it back up in the air this weekend.

I know have it back up on that side some 15 feet higher than previously done..and also put in line a new pully to ease/re distribute the strain on the wire. Plans are also to go to the hardware store and obtain a spring and put it in line with the pulley to further ease the strain.

Had time for one contact to verify that the system is working and made a contact to a ham on 75 meters in Prince Edward Island, Canada. A lot of stations coming from the North East last evening. Was using my Xiegu G90 rig and about 20 watts of power to make that trip.

Back to other projects on which I have been procrastinating...

Glad to have the long range station back working and Q5.

Now I also need to get another fishing reel...ocean type and fill it with 25 pound test and some 3 oz. lead sinkers to aid in the antenna maintenance..as my olde on finally gave out on me.

If you fish, add a heavy sinker and "cast" it over a tree. I can cast farther with a spinning reel than an ocean Penn type reel.

Between ice storms, snow and high winds moving the tree limb, the tension relaxing pulley was a great common sense to add!

I'm sorry to admit I'm an expert at procrastinating. I want to expand the garden area and protect it with an solar powered electric fence. To protect the garden from deer, at the last house, I bought a Zareba solar powered electric fence and need to add a fence and install it here.

My IC 7300 output power is "(HF/50MHz) SSB/CW/FM/RTTY: 2-100W, AM: 1-25W." I have deep cycle batteries from the bass boat and car batteries and 20 amp USB in or out USB battery packs and solar chargers with 5 to 12 VDC output.
RX is .9 amp and its waterfall display will show any TX activity.

The why is simple, power outages. Here we lose power; so far in 2021, we've lost power twice. Our phone is VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) and without power, no phone. However, I can hit the local 2 meter repeater to get help, EMT, LE or whatever.

To be blunt, we don't do all this for SHTF. We do it to prevent deer and rabbits from eating what we grow. Anyone who has ever eaten a home grown tomato knows the difference in taste between it and store bought. If most would need an ambulance, all they need to do is dial 911. Sane as others, I reload because it costs less. We grow our own vegetables because they taste better and use heirloom seeds.

Amen on that Tugaloo...I too use a spinning reel on a stiff ocean boat pole....3 ounce teardrop sinker..and that is precisely the reel which broke on me this time around.
When I go to the mountains I take that very rod and reel and use it to put up my G5RV antenna and often in a sloper configuration...otherwise as a dipole.

This idea came from my friend to whom I often catch out in Tennessee where he moved from here after his retirement. It has worked out well...and is pretty simple too.

I too keep a deep cycle battery on a trickle charger out in my garage....and also have put back a spare 20 amp power supply and also two of these rechargeable battery packs for my 20 watt G90 radios

Agree...not everything need be SHTF but it is a type of survival if even it only lowers your costs;/expenses...
That is money/monies on which you can save, or spend on something else...budgeting too is survival,
But no ..not everything one does is for SHTF.

I too reload because it costs less...and ironically I found over time that I verily enjoyed my time at the reloading bench.

Recently reloaded some 7mm TCU ammo and also some .45ACP and put them away.

And yes...definitely ....on the tomatoes. Years ago I dated an older country woman who liked to garden and she spoiled me on home grown tomatoes....versus the store bought. She also made what she called home made drop biscuits and also with them made a delicious tomato gravy to go on top the broken up biscuits....very tasty. She would use her home canned tomatoes.

In my younger days I found I liked older women because most of them can do more than microwave. They can sure spoil you ...put weight on you too.

I'd like to try one of those air boss launchers; however, it appears the kR4LO version requires special weights.

As some turn off when the battery reaches a certain voltage, float chargers are pretty good, too.

Our focus isn't WROL just enjoying what we can while we can.

Actually, the most well prepared people I've met through one of their daughters; they are pretty much completely sustaining. He plows with a horse and they grow and can a lot of vegetables. They grind their own flour and cornmeal; bake their own bread and churn their own butter. They have chickens and if they were never refrigerated, eggs keep a long time.
Although there is no internet etc; the daughter's 3 kids love to visit because the food is so good.

Same here, I enjoy reloading. Finding that sweet spot where the rifle holds its best group.

Last week, I saw a horizontal bolt of lightning; so close, it was flash-bang. As all the electronics have UPS units, nothing was harmed except the thermostat for the HVAC died.

IMO, a lot of women and men aren't interested in actually cooking something worth eating.
We eat healthy; however, it must taste good.

We went to a local FFL. Although every item listed on his website states out of stock; the store is well stocked. He said his local customers are more important than internet ones.

Got up a bit early this morning and decided to cut my grass before the rain from this tropical storm arrived.

In making circles with my riding lawnmower...I discovered why my long range HF loop antenna was giving me funny readings on my meter.

One section of it had fallen again. I will be using my boat pole and new fishing reel and a 3 ounce teardrop sinker to run a line over the trees to re hang the wire.

I have two more 12 gauge stranded wire rolls...from Lowes....500 feet length as spares ...for just such occasions and or happenings.

I tried to get on again with my friend out in Tennessee and got non normal readings on my meters telling me something was wrong.

                              Glad I found the problem.
