    The ultimate comm setup?

    After take great pleasure in fondling my new Yaesu HT's this weekend (dang i wish that study book would get here!)...I started scrounging around to see what what CB gear never made it to the yard sale tables. I think my Uniden base got sold, but I did find my old Cobra 25LTD, and an old Boomer 250 linear (which I never hooked up of course :rolleyes:) and found my old Antron 99 buried under leaves behind the garage!
    Finding all that stuph really brought back fond memories of late night chats with locals, as well as passing truckers, back in the days when my debt/income ratio scared the living crap out of me...but was actually better than today. Ah the good old days!
    Anyway, after pausing to enjoy the memories, I decided that it really wouldn't be a bad idea to have all bases covered when it comes to communication, so I think I'll rig up this old Cobra as a base.
    Anybody else use both...or more? What's your ultimate setup?

    Sorry I missed this post :(

    Glad you are getting the radio bug :)

    Ultimate setup IMHO would be a dedicated HF voice 100w rig with dedicated antenna as well as an identical setup dedicated for digital HF...

    I personally like the Kenwood TS-2000(x) , but any multi-band HF rig with a high stability TXCO (to provide freq stability that helps with digital modes) That way you can cover 160M thru 10M on HF as well as 6m, 2m and 70cm...

    For me the ultimate HF antenna would be a SteppIR beam www.steppir.com (or actually any of them) for 'frequency/band agility'. Of course other wires in the air would also be nice. A few stacked high gain VHF antennas for some serious VHF Dxing :)

    Also be nice to top it off with an Solar power system (lets say 1000w of panels and 1000 amp hours worth of deep cycle batteries)

    Of course in an 'hardened' underground secret bunker as well ;)

      Man...I'm dying to reach out there and touch someone. Got the programing software for the 170's today....but had to order an adapter for the dang serial port harness. I did get a list of frequency's going though.
      I did a temporary setup for the CB today...man, CB ain't what it used to be...it's dead out there! I can hear and talk to truckers on 19...but that's all I've heard!
      I'm a bit concerned about the mountain behind me when it comes time to try 2m or better. The Mt Mitchell repeater is to my left (east), and I might be able to get high enough for a straight shot to it...south is wide open....and there's a mountain range about 2 miles west of me.
      Been studying my ARRL license manual, but I reserve that time for when I won't be disturbed.
      Really looking forward to attending the local ham club meeting in a couple of weeks. Hope they like newbies!

        I know what you mean snal...

        Sometimes if you are in a hole you will not get out much on VHF, so you may hafta resort to hill or mountain topping...

        There should be a few repeaters you can hit there though...

        Had the same problem when I lived near the South Mountains... I couldn't hit anything South of me :( No problems now though :D

          When I followed the link for the antenna I noticed the Rohn tower Dont forget to throw a camera on that tower if you have one

            Good idea! Some hams around these parts also put on some serious floodlights to light up the area :eek:

            A camera up high has some serious advantages!

                I have been toying with the idea of the new breed of IP wireless cameras...

                This dude converted an wireless IP Camera to run on a small solar panel and battery pack! http://www.jakeludington.com/video_s...y_project.html

                Something like this would be nice for a camera you could view from anywhere you have an internet connection... talk about birds eye view!


                Don't think the camera is watertight so you may need to look into a better one for that purpose. However it is a 'proof of concept' idea that will work!!!

                X10 cameras are OK for temporary short range low res improvised camera systems... IOW a toy...

                  I am working on a power system for a rock query that will have a few wireless ip camera that are all going to be powered by micro solar systems. These will be nifty.

                  One of the coolest things I have seen is a guy on youtube that flys his remote control plane by a head set that gives him a birds eye view = poor mans drone; very easy to build high flying very usefull

                    dont forget the microphones because some times you can hear farther then your vision will allow you.
