The movie depicts only one scenario, years ago I picked up a book that listed 49 other possible scenario's. You can only plan for one or two, not all 50. Yes it was a very depressing movie.

Liked it but thought they'd overdone the misery-factor and the lack of factions that would arise to build on the ashes of the old world.
Viggo was cool in it though.

The book is genius! Cormac McCarthy wrote it to punch you in the stomach. His use of misaligned chapters are nightmare glimpses into a truly nightmare event. A major world changing event will not be a fun thing. This book illustrates perfectly.

Yes, a new year. Time for you to shave that back hair. I am sure someone here could use a winter coat if they can get past the smell.

Both the book and the movie depressed me..... it is what I imagine happening in a worst case scenario.... it was not a happy thing for me to see this brought to life in the movie version.... but I am still glad that I read/saw it.... just reinforces why I prep.... and why I keep tabs on Myakka's supplies.... speaking of which, it's a new year, yeti..... time to rotate the cans/jars....

Really liked the movie, although 'enjoyed' is a relative term. I haven't read the book, local library has to order so much of what I would like to read. But now I can down load e-books (Christmas present) so it will get read. Really like paper books the best, but if I had all I wanted I could use them to built a fallout shelter above ground!

Could not finish the boring book, gave me no desire to see the movie.

I thought the writing was amazing--very powerful stuff, in terms of how and how well the story is told.
The story--events/conditions described--is kind of relentlessly grim, with only a few uplifting moments.
Made me think of the quote from Krushchev(?) about how, after a nuclear war, the survivors would envy the dead.
I stayed away from the movie knowing it would probably leave me 'down'. I like a different result from watching a movie. But maybe that's short-sighted somehow.
It might've been different if there wasn't a kid involved/at stake.
One little thing: after reading it, both my wife and I were sort of gut-punched by it's version of a post-apocalypse world, so it was sort of a relief to see a possible flaw in that version of reality: with apparently all plant life dead, where would oxygen come from?
I realize by expecting a thoroughly scientifically-sound version of reality, I'm not really 'getting' what the book was about--not being fair to it--but it's a sort of backhanded compliment to it that I was so struck by its mood/vision that I needed that 'flaw' to get over and past its grim vision.
