makes me think of the original police academy when Bubba Smith is trying to learn to drive and rips the seat out of that tiny Honda their driving.

I talked to my hubby he said the Japan reactor is being dismantled and is not in service anymore. I haven't researched it but he keeps with this stuff too."A little rebellion now and then is a good thing..." ~Thomas Jefferson

Is anyone watching the earthquakes off of the Oregon coast? There was a 5.9 quake within the past hour (don't know if any tsunami warning have been issued) and that site keeps getting stronger quakes as well as cluster quakes. The north part of the plate has been quite active in the past 24 hours.

I believe the majority of the fuel is still in place from what I've read and that they still have to try to continually cool the pools. I understood that they needed to repair quite a bit of stuff before they can even think about trying to figure out how to try unfueling the ones with the most damage.
And still loads and radioactive materials and contaminated junk laying about.I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you!

They are to also still be getting one or more of the buildings flooded from ground water. What I read said they still don't know if the 3 that melted down didn't breach their containment vessel by basically burning out the bottom to now possibly be in contact with the earth underneath.

That's me... like to give everyone a warm and fuzzy feeling...
Interesting how the media doesn't report any of this. I see where the Japanese were trying to take S. Korea or Tiawaun to the world court for unfair business practices because they banned a lot of seafood and other products from Japan over concerns of contamination. From what I was reading it sounded like they might be justified in some instances. Since it's in their back yards I'm betting they pay a lot closer attention and have their Geiger counters out to check the fish.I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you!

Ok! I went and saw the movie today. A little background on me and movies.....
I rarely if ever go and see a movie on the big screen. I am also a very hard critic. What I thought about this movie?
It was ok.
It kind of reminded me of a 70's-80's gig. I was humming the CHIPs theme song in a few places. THATS not a bad thing considering all the crap they pump out today. The effects were great, as they should be in today's technology. The Rock did some good acting. I liked the veins popping out of his big bald head when he was trying to rescue his daughter. (Who knows, those were probably CGI too!)
Now the things I didn't like.....
WHAT in God's BIG green earth was up with all the stealing and looting by the morally straight stars!?!?!?!?! How come nobody waS SHOT FOR LOOTING???? The kids were pilfering from a broken down fire engine WITH cops and soldiers a few feet away!?! Haha AND...trading a plane for a stolen truck???? lol Ok....ok...ok... I know the crap has hit the fan in a big way, but jeeezzz. We know it's reality in a situation like that that we would pilfer to survive.
My biggest bitch was the Tsunami. If the quake happened ON the San Andreas, a giant ass wave wouldn't form. I guess an "unknown" fault could have done the deed. it should have been explained more. Oh and, like what was mentioned; The East coast feeling it??? Ummm....No.
Anywhoo! It was worth seeing. Go see it.

I saw the movie today. Honestly I was stressed out the entire time! I refuse to EVER go to the West Coast now LOL I've been to San Francisco before. Will NOT be returning. My best friend moved to Beverly Hills, CA. I'm not visiting... lol
Very good movie, action packed... seriously NON-STOP action... I agree with Buggy on the tsunami. It needed more explanation. It showed some tender scenes, intense scenes, and most definitely human nature scenes. When SHTF whether its in one area, the US or the world you will see some crazy, crazy stuff go down for sure. The only thing was they sure did seem to go through everything i.e... helicopter rescue, helicopter crash, steal a truck, steal a plane, jump from plane, hijack a boat, etc.... not to mention jumping the wall of water before it crested... very good worth seeing. Prepare for the intensity! The Rock rocked it :"A little rebellion now and then is a good thing..." ~Thomas Jefferson

Buggy,
Maybe the Rock figured, after making the discussion to take the states helo for his own use, why stop there. LOL!
On the tsunami folks. If you noticed the shift of the plates in the clip after Bakersfield, there was about a 40 - 50ft spread as well as about a 25 -35ft drop or rise in the one plate. Since that plate also extends out in the Pacific, that large of a shift would cause a huge displacement by either sinking or heaving up, which appeared to me (Not a geologist) to be the case. that much water rushing in and displacing would stack up much higher than the actual event. Similar to the Tohoku, Japan quake which I think was a 9.0 on the Richter scale. Here is a picture, since my explanation probably only makes since in my head. LOL!

Has anybody here researched the San Andreas fault? If the big one occurs, or maybe when the big one occurs, will it cause a tsunami? It was always my understanding that the fault was moving north. In other words Los Angeles is moving toward San Francisco. I thought the fault was going back into the mantle somewhere under the Aleutian Islands. I have never heard of a tsunami being part of the preparedness plan.
Is it something to prepare for, or does it just make for an exciting movie? If the tsunami does hit how far inland does it go?The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.

I've only seen a small tsunami (15 - 20 ft.) in Hawaii and it gave me a healthy respect for them. Talked to some of the elders when I lived over there and they told stories about the big one hitting Hilo in 1960. Put the fear in me. Tsunamis are a evacuate only disaster without one of the new life pods built for tsunamis. Then you have to be home or at it when you get the alarm. As I understand on the San Andreas fault it will be the secondary faults that will cause much of the damage (including tsunamis).
Any upthrust of an under sea fault is creating a tsunami. It only leaves the direction, speed, height and frequency to be determined. :)

Thanks Dale. There is far more there than I realized, and it would appear that a tsunami is a realistic threat.
Completely agree with your assessment. If one is coming you get out of Dodge ASAP. I have only seen news footage, but the devastation is enormous. It isn't anything you want to try to ride out.The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.

The first graphic Dale shows interests me.
There were several strong earthquakes in the 1800's and one in the early 1900's. Then hardly anything up until now. A person can make a reasonable deduction that we are far overdue for one, like what scientists are saying.
Mega earthquakes + mega cities (San Fran and LA) = mega disasters.
The question we need to ask is this: Will a mega disaster paralyze the rest of the country?

I don't know if it would paralyze, but it would certainly be a huge, huge disruption. For all intents and purposes California as we know it will cease to exist. Anything that comes out of there; goes in there; or comes through there isn't going to happen for a long time. It will be a massive undertaking just to assess the damage; a second mountain to climb in getting it fixed.
I can't even count all the dominoes that will fall if that happens. Our business was very much affected by the strike in the West Coast ports. That doesn't even scratch the surface of what would happen in a true disaster. The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.

I believe it will be a life altering event when a major quake hits California. 50% of our major ports will be lost or severely damaged, not to mention the loss of food production and manufacturing. If it's only California affected, we will recover.
My question is, what if it's not? The entire Pacific ring of fire is connected and usually when one event is triggered, others follow. Earthquakes could be generated anywhere on the ring from a large quake as well as triggering volcanos. Major tsunamis could strike anywhere across the pacific basin just as they did in 1960, when the Chili quake sent a tsunami to Hilo, HI. Mount Rainier in WA. has been showing volcanic activity for a couple years now as well as Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens. Parts of Washington have geological evidence of tsunamis in excess of 100 feet high. Any combination of these major events could easily alter life as we know it. Just something to think about.
