So what... the guy got caught and no damage to the Lifelock guy's credit, so his identity was still well protected and that is all one can really hope for anymore.

But the deal is he put it out there and challanged anyone to steal his credit, and they did, twice actually it's been done.

I actually know a publication they advertise with and they just pulled all their ad campaigns

          Dear Diesel and Forum Members,

I couldn't access the story from the link provided. If I recall correctly, though, the man from LifeLock has also been sued by customers who have had their identity stolen while using LifeLock.

About the only thing more idiotic and degrading were all the big he-men from as far back as at least the 1950s who actually and willfully tattooed their SS numbers onto themselves! I guess memories of what happened accross the pond a few years prior were pretty short even then.

Frank Abagnale, the ex-con artist whose life story was recounted in the movie Catch Me If You Can actually recommended that individuals and organizations stop using the SS Number as a universal identifier.

That makes perfect sense. It's not like organizations can't generate new numbers and store them in the computer data bank the same way SS Numbers are stored today. They're just bits and bytes like any other piece of computer data.

And actually, according to the Social Security Act, not using SS Numbers as a universal identifier is the only really legal course to take. According to the Social Security Act, it is supposed to be illegal to use the SS Number for any other purpose besides drawing Social Security. Older Social Security cards actually had that message on them too.

Alas, though, the Constitution was already breached by the creation of Social Security, so 4th and 5th Amendment rights can't mean much to the powers-that-be either. And there are so many laws nowadays, no one takes seriously the few laws that actually protect individual rights.

In the meantime, if you want ID protection, like everything else, you have to do it yourself.
