I thought that this article was interesting in the fact that the US Forest Service is calling for a prescribed burn [in order] to locate weapons, ammo, and explosives (sounds like reloading powder) that a fugitive may have stashed around his camp site.

This got me to thinking, how safe are your caches? You will want to make sure any caches you have are buried well if they come looking for your cache and burn the area. Also consider that those landmarks/trees that were there may be gone after a burn, so locating it again may be difficult if you are basing it on 'sight' only! Be sure to have other methods to recover your cache.

Thinking about caching on public land??? Granted the guy was a dirtbag but you are not... at least not yet ;)

Actually, if the only reason you classify him as a dirtbag is because he grows his own pot, I disagree. With only a dozen or so plants, it's unlikely that he was growing it for more than his own use, and maybe some close friends or family. The story isn't really very specific, though, so I'm just generalizing here.

I just think the war on drugs is a waste of time and resources. While I don't enjoy the effects of drugs on myself, I find it hard to criminalize another person for doing something to themselves.

Anyway, I digress....To get to the caching issue...I don't cache weapons. I do store a reasonable amount of ammo for my chosen weapons, but no more than I can effectively carry (about 40-50 Lbs total for all loadouts).

My reasoning is that I can only fire one weapon at a time effectively, and I have made my weapons choices based on my personal preferences. Having ten different rifles just seems to me to be....well....redundant to the extreme. While I can still understand and appreciate the affinity for weapons collecting, I think, for me, I'd rather save time and resources by choosing a good weapon for myself and becoming proficient with it.

My firearms choices are as follows:

One main battle rifle (12g pump);
One primary sidearm (9mm auto w/suppressor);
One backup (.22 auto);
One high-power air rifle (.177 Powerline hunting model).

My 12g loadout includes buckshot, slug, and fowl cartridges; I carry both FMJ and SHP rounds for my 9mm; I carry only high-end, subsonic ammo for my .22; I My air rifle (an excellent silent hunting alternative) ammo can be carried in a small pocket, as it comes in a 500 round tin about the size of a tobacco can.

All the ammo I figure on needing for up to one year or more (in the absence of full-scale firefights) fits nicely into my Battle Bag, and adds about 45-50 Lbs. to my overall pack-out weight.

Most of the drug users,growers and dealers I have come across have been dirtbags. I do not have a problem with others doing drugs, it is when these folks resort to common thievery to support their bad habits that I take issue.

Yes, the war on drugs is a failure/farce. A simple conviction of drug possesion can RUIN your chances for gainful employment and forces you slip back into your old habits and SOME of these habits require alot of cash. Not having any means to support yourself, you began to steal from others to support your habits (granted Mary J ain't probably one of them but many of the harder drugs are) and therein lies the problem which 'I' consider such folks DIRTBAGS.

I personally do not know the fellar, so being what it is in a media spinned environment may not be the 'true story'.

I agree that folks have a choice/right to do what they will with their body, but that choice/right end "at the end of their hand, and where MY nose begins!" IOW you wanna do drugs??? Fine, don't come to my home looking for items to steal to support your habits! NUFF SAID:)

As for your self defense battery, it sounds like you got a good start :) I don't know how your AO is, but you may want to consider a 'stand off distance' rifle. Ideally for legal purposes, all self defense should be 'in the heat of the moment' which usually happens at close distance. However, in a bad situation, you may find a need for a bolt action/break action (NEF handi rifle is an example) that has a longer range than either your 9mm or 12 gauge.

Sounds like you got it well thought out, just thought it was something worth considering :)

Yeah, I find your views on the Drug issue totally compatico.

As for your advice about the SO, I've trained with a variety of rifles, both in military and hunting applications and scenarios. I'm good with a HP rifle, qualified marksman w m16 and 7.62 BALRAAW (bolt action long-range advance assault weapon), I was, however, assigned the S.A.W., hence the name. During my tours in several theatres, though, I found myself reaching for my trusty ol' Bessie (Ithica M37 pump) over the S.A.W., and consider myself a "sawed-off surgeon."

I certainly don't consider myself a "sniper" caliber shooter, and I'm a firm believer in sticking to what you're good at. For me, it's close and medium-range combat. Hopefully, WTSHTF, I'll be fortunate enough to team up w/one of my buddies, who is a former recon snipier...he can handle the long range biz, should it be needed.
