    Rusty,

    One thing that would make me averse to supporting the Tamil Tigers is thst there are ties between the Tamil liberation movement and Palestinian and Marxist/Leninist terrorists.

      [QUOTE=TheUnboundOne;2203]Rusty,

      You are basically correct, but I'm missing a connection here. Is there something I said that seems to contradict what you said?

        Lots of movements tie themselves with undesireable folks when in the throws of tossing off their chains. We, as Americans, allied ourselves with the Frenchies when we declared independence. A favorite quote of mine is from somewhat of a tyrant, Otto Von Bismark. He said (when speaking of the German unification of the Diet) "When the pot boils, the scum floats to the surface". THis holds true for the leaders that arise, and the alliances made. It is not who one allies oneself with to achieve your goals, it is what is done when those goals are reached! The Tamil Tigers are, in my opinion, just wanting what most people desire. The right to self determination and the freedom to worship as they see fit. Is that not what our grievances were with the English? They do have their share of bad folks though.

          Rusty,

          It is one thing to learn and glean tactics and strategy from all sources; I fully agree with that. At very least, you can use them to think up countering tactics and strategy or at most, you can use them yourself. (Provided, of course, that the tactics and strategies are compatible with upholding innocent life, liberty, and property.)

          Fortunately, however, it is possible to learn and glean tactics and strategy from a safe distance via history, intel, and reconaissance. It is neither necessary nor ethical to make common cause with ideologies and powers that have starved, enslaved, tortured, and murdered tens and hundreds of millions.

          As for sources of logistics and munitions, I think that a smart independence movement that wants to succeed, remain true to principle, and uncorrupt by tyrants needs to build, line up, and secure it's own sources and means of production well before even the first demonstration, let alone the first shots fired.

          Although the American Revolutionaries did make common cause with France, we could have just as easily told them: "No thanks, Louis. We've got plenty of graveyards and saltpeter pits for gunpowder...And we're big-pant people too, so we don't need p!ss-boys to go with us to the toilet."

          :D ;)

            One thing we do need to remember, is that many of the founding fathers were self serving, and were scoundrals in their own sense. Many saw the advantages of an independent nation, where they would be able to guide policies. That being said, they did set up a system where we all profited. But, true to principals? I think not. Best for most people? You bet.
