  • Unusual news of the day: Driver survives crash over South Rim of Grand Canyon

It’s not every day you hear weird news like this. On Monday evening, a (very lucky) unidentified young man was found in the road at Desert View Drive near Twin Overlooks by passing drivers. When they stopped to see if he was OK, he told them he had accidentally driven his car off the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Park rangers were called to the scene by the drivers that found the accident victim. The 21 year old man told rangers he was able to self-extricate himself from the wreck and hike back up to the South Rim, despite injuries sustained in the accident. He was treated at the scene and then driven by ambulance to Flagstaff Medical Center in Flagstaff, AZ for additional treatment of injuries; none were life-threatening. There have been cases of people driving off the rim of the Grand Canyon before, but not all who do this survive to tell the tale.

After searching, park rangers were able to locate the vehicle about 200 feet below the rim, wedged against a tree. A plan to remove the vehicle is being developed but a timeline of when that will happen has not been released. The park service is also further investigating the incident, but no further information was available at this time.

Read the full press release on the National Park Service website. http://www.nps.gov/grca/parknews/dri...canyon-rim.htm
