  • Senators propose granting president emergency Internet power

    FYI

A new U.S. Senate bill would grant the president far-reaching emergency powers to seize control of or even shut down portions of the Internet.

The legislation announced Thursday says that companies such as broadband providers, search engines, or software firms that the government selects "shall immediately comply with any emergency measure or action developed" by the Department of Homeland Security. Anyone failing to comply would be fined.
That emergency authority would allow the federal government to "preserve those networks and assets and our country and protect our people," Joe Lieberman, the primary sponsor of the measure and the chairman of the Homeland Security committee, told reporters on Thursday. Lieberman is an independent senator from Connecticut who caucuses with the Democrats.

Because there are few limits on the president's emergency power, which can be renewed indefinitely, the densely worded 197-page bill (PDF) is likely to encounter stiff opposition.

I had a disturbing thought when I realized that this asshat is bringing down the entire Western world.

I've been assuming that his basis is his Marxist ideology. What if it's not? What if his basis is Islam? Or both?

I don't see what benefit there is for the American people if the Government shuts down any website.
Unless it is to protect us from radical, troublemaking, freethinkers carrying on about constitutional rights and limited government.
      All hail Obama!

This got through Senate Committee yesterday (25th). Hopefully a full House vote will kill it.

The 1st Amendment was once something that I once thought was such a important part of what makes America--well America, that it would never be a RIGHT that was taken from us. I am fearful that with the constant chipping away of the core values of our founders that one day very soon we will not be able to tell this place was once the home of free men.
I spent many years in the U.S. Army when our attention was focused on the communist threat from eastern Europe, with the benefit of hindsight I now know we were looking in the wrong direction.

Who on earth should have this much power? And why is everyone so complacent and letting him have it? I have never seen a president have such a sway over people in my life. I can't believe what I am witnessing. Someone said it is the "cult of personality" and I don't even think he has a personality so I find it hard to follow the mindset of anyone who is in such awe of this man. I cannot even stand to watch him speak when he gives one of his teleprompter speeches. I am scared to death for my grandchildren and the world they are in right now.

You, too then, remember getting under your desk at school? Or against the wall under the windows?

Actually, also having lived through that, we weren't looking in the wrong direction, we just should have been widened our gaze.

No one should have this much power, I suspect you also remember the line, "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely." The complacent ones do not know what this country was and will be again, they haven't been taught. We were looking at Gatesvilleguy's Red Horde and not paying attention while their fellow travelers took over our educational institutions. They have our children's minds, using them as useful idiots.

The adult useful idiots are the ones who astonish me. The feminists support this travesty. Do they not realize that with the fall of Western Civilization, feminism also dies? Do the leeches at the public tit not have a clue that with the fall of Western Civilization, the spigot dries up? Do the perpetually offended not realize that with the fall of Western Civilization, rather than attention and sympathy, they'll get a bullet?

We have much work to do. Diesel's "What have you done today to prepare" thread could be mirrored with a, "What have you done today to bring the country back onto track" thread.

With all due respect Mrs Owl, I'm not sure that this country can be brought back on track............ At least not in our lifetime.

So we shouldn't work to that end?

You're right wife! We need to stay verbal and involved. Am now an active member of a Tea Party and have stepped into politics as a precinct delegate in our township. It is making me crazy to just 'sit and bitch'... and my letters/emails seem useless except for the folks I already support/vote for. Am hoping that I can at least have a small impact. We cannot give up!

Absolutely we should, I'm just saying with what we have to "work with" I'm just not sure we'll ever see it back on the "Right Tracks". I personally don't have the answer, but I do know that what's being done by our "leaders" isn't working, and hasn't worked for a long time now. So as someone said (I believe it was you or Mr. Skyowl) "prepare for the worst and pray for the best"........ or something to that effect.
