  • H1N1 Virus

Received this from an email grom Graigers News Letter.

    Influenza
    Pandemic Influenza Has Been Declared
The recent, ongoing, and widespread outbreaks of H1N1 flu (Swine Flu) led to the WHO (World Health Organization) to elevate the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 6, which indicates that a global pandemic is underway. Since this declaration, the virus has continued to spread, causing illness along with the regular seasonal flu viruses. The United States has reported the highest number of H1N1 cases, but most people have recovered without requiring medical treatment.

    The Disease
H1N1 virus (swine flu) is thought to spread the same way as regular seasonal influenza viruses - through coughing and sneezing by people who are ill with the virus. The CDC also believes that it may be spread by touching contaminated objects, then touching your mouth or nose. Research is continuing on this mode of transmission. The H1N1 virus is reported to feature many of the same flu-like symptoms as seasonal flu, such as fever, chills, cough, sore throat, headache, body aches, and fatigue. Some people have also reported nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

    General Guidance
The CDC, WHO, and HHS (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) are continuing to provide updated recommendations to help maintain wellness

These experts also recommend following everyday actions to help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses, such as H1N1.
Wash hands frequently with soap and water. Use alcohol-based hand cleaners if soap and water are not available.
Cover coughs and sneezes with tissues, and dispose of tissues promptly.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
Avoid close contact with sick people.
If you get sick with influenza, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others.

just getting over it myself, bout a week or so feeling bad, sore throat, fever, etc... treat the symptoms, let the virus run it's course, and try not to pass it on, although that is really difficult when you have a fam (son is at doctor now :( )... I have certainly been sicker, but it still ain't no fun.

I took vitamins, gargled with salt water for the sore throat, tried to keep my head cleaned out with OTC nasal spray, and plenty of fluids. I really didn't rest that much, but probably should have. Also took benadryl, but I am a chronic allergy sufferer too, and the ragweed is really bad right now...

I talked to my Doctor last week about vaccinations,he did recommend that I get the influenza vaccination , only because I am considered a high risk, and no, it's not because of age ! When I ask about the H1N1 he would only say that , he was not going to take it himself, and would not recommend it to any of his patients. his reasoning was that the vaccine was too new ,and not enough research had been done to prove that it was safe , or effective. That is good enough for me, but I hope noone make a decision to , or not to take the vaccine based on what I say here. This is only one Dr.'s opinion, but I trust this man completely,I owe my life to him twice over in the past four years. If not for him I would not be sitting here typing this today

I have never taken any flu vaccine... the potential for something else to go wrong is too high for me. I get the flu every few years, chalk it up to "it was my turn" and keep on going.

I'm sure others take it as soon as it is available, good for them, I hope it is truly beneficial.

This would be the first time for me, If I do decide to take one this year .

rsanders, thanks for letting us know what your Dr. said. Not taking the vaccination was already my mind set, but having it backed up makes my decision a little easier. And hubste5, thanks for letting us know how you handled it. If its that easy to fight what is all the hype about taking the vaccine. Seems to me if you let your body fight it, your chances of getting again would be less. JMOP

That is one of the magic bullets for this flu. Since it kills people by over-stimulating their immune systems and letting THAT kill them, benadryl should be in everyone's medi-bag!

Interesting you would say that, I did not know that it was the flu at first, and assumed it was born from allergies. I was so miserable that I started taking Benadryl at night (which usually makes me so groggy the next day that I cannot function), but instead generally felt better the next day, so continued taking it through-out the flu cycle. I must say that treating the symptoms with Benadryl and the things I mentioned earlier really helped me get through. I'm not one to take meds much, but I truly believe it made a difference.

This flu, like the one that killed so many people in 1917-1918 (or was it 18-19?), takes out the young healthy people mostly. Those with the best immune systems. The immune system over-reacts to the bugs, causing a "cytokine storm" which is the healthy immune system attacking EVERYTHING, and it ends up attacking their own body (lungs particularly) and killing them. Benadryl wards off the cytokine storm and is recommended by doctors for people who are self-treating or unable to get to medical care.
