Hell, their dog could have fleas and give it to them. If caught early, there is no reason for anyone to die of the plague today unless they have other horrid health issues.
We get plague coming over the mountains (from Mexico) here in AZ almost every year. They find a dead rabbit or some other small animal. It's more of a curiosity. Hadn't seen anyone die of it for a long time.
One of our BOLs is in NM.
