Were they perhaps living in an old run down place or a reservation? They had a show on that, and one of the ways people wtill get it is with mice infestations, commonly found in old run down places. There is another similar diease (Hunta?) that they found on a reservation, that originated with the mouse dropping building up in the run down place they were living in.

The Hanta virus is spread through mouse urine. It give flu-like symptons.
They were "examining" the house where the kids lived, they gave very little info for "privacy" reasons, so know almost nothing about how they may have gotten it. Hell, their dog could have fleas and give it to them. If caught early, there is no reason for anyone to die of the plague today unless they have other horrid health issues.
We get plague coming over the mountains (from Mexico) here in AZ almost every year. They find a dead rabbit or some other small animal. It's more of a curiosity. Hadn't seen anyone die of it for a long time.
One of our BOLs is in NM.
