Diesel, It's even worse than the article said. Terrorists could easily hijack trucks and railroad cars transporting fuel, hazmats, and explosives and by placing these vehicles just right and setting them off, could paralyze commerce for the entire nation and maybe even the entire North American Continent.

And because holders of Commercial Driver's Licenses are forbidden from legally keeping and bearing arms, our laws have rendered truckers helpless against such hijacking and attack. I also seriously doubt that there are enough railroad "bulls" prepared for anything more serious than evicting hoboes from freight cars.

That situation needs to be reversed immediately, with every trucker, every weigh station employee, every train engineer, and conductor issued a pistol and a shotgun.

there are much much much larger vunerabilities in this country that would bring commerce and more to a screeching hault in minutes, VERY VERY easily, literally zero security. It's very scary :(

Diesel, You are correct that there are many dangerous scenarios out there.

Less than 5 percent of our incoming cargo is ever inspected, and probably most of that isn't inspected with Geiger Counters or Ion Mass Spectrometers or any other WMD detection technology.

Our borders are like Swiss cheese and open for all manner of threats, whether from murderous and suicidal gangs like The Zetas to foreign spies from Russia or Red China to Islamofascist terrorists, all with enclaves both North and South of our borders, all of whom could smuggle in WMDs with sufficient effort.

And these are some of the more obvious possibilities.

Glenn Beck's "Perfect Day" scenario with terrorists hijacking schoolbuses full of children nationwide is yet another utterly evil way a whole nation could be held hostage.

What makes the "Perfect Day" scenario and the truck and train scenario so sinister is that terrorists could pull them off with things not normally thought of as WMD, yet the effect could be just as bad or worse. Neither individual Survivalists nor government officials can prepare for a threat if they don't see it coming, so it is necessary to always think about the unthinkable and about ways to counter-act it.

Yeah those are all very good and valid points, but there are so many more easily done things, that would bring this country to an instant halt it's incredible, i'd love to chat about it.. but I don't want to help, promote or give any lurkers the wrong ideas :/

What's insane is the money we spend on stupid programs and helping people who don't want to work or who have 87 illegitimate children could be used to help fortify this country ...

you know what.. i'm going to stop now lol before i really go off

I think you are wrong on that one. Unless the law has changed in the last 18 months. I will call my contacts and verify that. I believe in Texas, at least, an OTR trucker's sleeper is considered a dwelling and is covered under the Texas Castle Doctrine. But, I will verify that and get back to you in the next couple of days.

Folks, meet my other side. When I was employed I was known as "doom & gloom". Guess when your sphincter has puckered enough times, your view of things change.

There is nothing that can be done to ensure any American's safety. Build all the walls, inspect everything, restrict whatever/whomever you want. It ain't gonna help. Without enumerating them, think of all the terroristic acts that have occurred in the world. Don't ignore those events where the .gov has advised "nothing to see here-move on." You must remember that everything is based on perception, "Do you FEEL safer?" "Do you FEEL that the .gov is doing enough to protect us?" The concept of terror is also based on perception. To the idealogue body count doesn't matter, disrupting normal life is the goal. Making you afraid to go to the mall, subway, business district, school, etc. is the goal. Likewise, the .gov makes you FEEL safer when you see heavily armed LEO in tactical uniforms doing various operations. You FEEL safer when the WMD proof command van arrives on the scene to take command. Trust me, we can't all fit into that van. In an NBC event, there's gonna be a lot of dead first responders before somebody figures out what's going on.

I'm probably able to relate some stories, some first hand, of events that never hit the news, which might have caused a few balloons to rise. But no point in it. One that did help form my attitude I will relate. Shortly after the murders of 11 September 2001, my team was assigned to the re-opening of an observation deck perched high up in a very tall building. A former president was attending the event. Well, commercial flights had just resumed and I was standing with numerous command type tacti-cool LEO's and protective type service folks awaiting the arrival. A commercial jet flew overhead and we all looked up in surprise and made various movements towards weapons or radios or whatevers. One of us chuckled and said "Just what did we think we were going to do to stop it, we couldn't even get to our vehicles quick enough to un-a$$ for our own safety."

The whole point of this diatribe is to encourage you all to continue with your normal lives, albeit somewhat more aware of our surroundings. We all locate the exits when we go to the movies, don't we? And stay on good terms with our choice of makers, we will meet again.
              ENJOY AND STAY SAFE

This is why community is so important in my mind. I can't control the borders or armies or terrorists but I can work with my neighbors to be ready for the results as best as possible. Combine that with preparations and training MIGHT just pull us through.

There is a plan for each of us but we must help ourselves.

Fortunately, no one on this thread is promoting anything horrible, myself included, nor could this discussion make any lurker do anything that they aren't already inclined to do anyway.

As for "giving ideas," I think that as long as we also let any lurkers know that some of us are prepared, that some of us will not go down like lambs to the slaughter, that some of us are ready to do a "let's roll" at anytime, that can make any lurkers a bit circumspect about their best laid plans.

                  ;)

I'm with you, man. So much of our national security problems can be chalked up to governments doing all of the things that they shouldn't (i.e. redistribution of wealth, protecting us from ourselves, legislating matters of private morality, etc.) and doing too few of the things that it should (i.e. guarding borders from foreign invaders, plus busting and prosecuting domestic criminals.)

It is worthy of note that before, during, and after 9/11, the F.B.I. was busy, not busting Al-Qaeda cells, not patrolling our dams and other sensitive spots...but staking-out a cat-house in New Orleans:

                    Nighthawg,

Howdy, Nighthawg! Thank you for sharing your experienced perspective.

You are correct that the aims of a terrorist are ruling his victims by fear and disruption of normal life. You are also correct that none of us can foresee and stop every terrorist threat (or even every natural threat to our lives either.)

By bringing up scenarios, it is not my intention to feed into that fear that a terrorist wants. Rather, I seek to identify possible and probable terrorist threats that we can know and to find ways that we can counter-act those threats.

And I hold that all counter-measures against terrorism must aim to destroy the terrorists, yet be compatible with the lives and freedom of the innocent. Freedom-loving people should not have to fundamentally change who they are to keep out of the range of a fanatic's blood-lust.

Individual, distributed armament and self-defense, along with neighbors seeing after neighbors, and free yet private flow of information and ideas on threats and possible responses, are among the better ways to satisfy that goal on the home front. There are other things that can be done domestically and militarily as well.

TUO (if I may be so familiar) good to hear from you.

I wouldn't think that bringing up scenarios would feed into anybody on this forums' fears. I just said that to keep the post to a reasonable length. Personally, I find it bothersome when somebody quotes an entire post in order to respond to parts of it. Also, restating a scenario or anything that everyone is already familiar with just causes me to zone out. I guess it's part of the Joe Friday training, "Just the facts". My attention span is just way too short.

Identifying possible and probable threats and countering those threats is the type of exercise I really enjoy participating in. The "What-If; Then-what" exercises are fascinating. Participating in those, even in an open forum like this, does not give the bad guys any new ideas or targets. Anything we can think of, they've been there and probably have photos and blueprints.

There is little in this world that gives me greater joy than the thought of some teen-ager, sitting in his work space, playing the video game of flying an UAV and sending terrorists to meet their virgins, then deciding what to have for lunch. Yes, a lot of the military personnel are teen-agers and they all do a tremendous job. Whatever can be done to aid the terrorists in obtaining their goal of dying for their cause is fine with me.

Now comes the sticky area. What, if anything, are you willing to compromise in the freedom vs. safety arena. Obviously, everthing I express is my personal opinion and is tempered by 35 yrs. as a gov. representative.

Cell phone taps, I'm OK with. If your uncle is a terr., I don't care if you call him to check on the price of tea, that call should be monitored. Do I trust the gov to do that? Yes, I guess I do until something better is developed.

National I.D. card or some other form of secure I.D.? Yes, I guess I'm OK with that also. Personally, I think that would solve several identified problems to include illegal immigration, voter fraud, etc. I know it's an extremely slippery slope with visions of checkpoints with the demand of "papers, let me see your papers" but I think something has got to be done, and until a better system is developed, I have to trust the gov with that info. Naturally, there must be absolute security for the info and it must be "hacker proof" (like that can ever happen).

However, restrict my freedom of movement, choice, or any of those other rights and freedoms enumerated in the B.O.R. and you're gonna have a fight on your hands. And naturally, any abuse by the gov or anybody else must be dealt with swiftly and severly.

So flame me, beat me, do anything you like. Just don't make me miss a meal.

And Diesel, if my tinfoil is too tight, just let me know and I'll adjust.

                        Nitehawg,

Herein lies the problem with giving government any new surviellance powers, such as those given by the USA PATRIOT Act: Who watches the Watchmen?...Especially when the enemy is among the Watchmen?

                          TUO,
I totally agree with you, and therein lies the rub. Our city had and probably still has gangbangers on the PD. Heck, one of our alderwomen was dating a gang leader and they found senstive documents in his posession that were traced back to her.

I desparately want to believe that there is somebody I can trust to be the watchman, but I have no idea who. The watching can't be too transparent for obvious reasons, yet somebody has to watch the watchman. Do we trust the courts, the media, congress, or whistleblowers? Right now three out of four of those aren't worthy of the bottom of a birdcage, and the fourth may have a personal agenda. Generally I trust somebody (to a degree) until they prove otherwise. If they remain trustowrthy I gradually trust them more and more. But what to do with folks you haven't met and don't know?

Check my post on the 3rd ID. I really want to believe that they will be the shining knights riding in for search & rescue, but I realize there is going to be a fine line. If that line gets crossed, I'm at a loss.

This sorta rings a bell though the post no longer works. But if these vulnerabilities could have been things that could have happened back in 08, what do you think could be those vulnerabilities. now. I have already gotten several text from Alerts USA this past week about the new islamic state propaganda poster depicts armed jihadi and drone w/package targeting Paris. English message reads: await for our surprises. On Oct. 5th I received one that said new islamic state propaganda poster threatens live music events with the message wait for our surprises. This one aimed for the US. These are just some of the messages I get from USA. Some have already been on the news and some not. So with that note what do you think our vulnerabilities could be in today's world?

My last government job was working in a company that moved sensitive cargoes via 18 wheedlers. This included 2-4 escort unmarked vehicles,

The two drivers were always armed with AR's and semi auto pistols. They always carried and never stopped for anything. They always had right of way along their routes.

I expect they still do the same thing today.
